Is it just me or does it seem weird that the Acopa site has zero recognition of John's passing last year.
Is the company still around?
I though Lynn Hill was going to step in to JBs shoes... What happened with that? (I think I can venture a guess...)
I just noticed they were not listed as an exhibitor at OR this year.

It does seem like a company going sideways--good products, but not available in too many places and no spokesman anymore. I hope they make it.

They are still around. Their products have always been a bit hard to find, but the site is still up and you can still mail order direct. Not sure what's going to happen with them in the future. It's a question mark at this point.

My last order with them a few months ago seemed fine, I called and special ordered my Aztecs, and got a pair of Legends, which took a couple of iterations to size...
... aside from not having the typical emailing to John about sizing and my JB issues, it seemed to be business as usual.

All good to hear, but I do wonder why no tribute to JB on the site...

The site (content-wise) seems totally dormant. If you search them on ebay, the majority of the listings are with "Home & Garden Hut" that has nothing to do with rock climbing.

this is a sad, understated notice of something which seemed to have happened yet no one acknowledged it.
I am happy that Acopa existed, great company with a great idea and some great shoes. Not to say they couldn't have been better, but they have certainly lasted for me, even though I am rough on shoes.
Now I'll husband my remaining shoes, hopefully many years into the future. And take inspiration from those I knew at Acopa, great people all.
Thanks Acopa!
It was wonderful while it lasted

Their phone numbers aren't being answered.
We should also note that just preceding JB's death, was the passing of wonderful Steve Karafa, the president of the company. The site does discuss that first death. But from then on, nothing that I can see has been done... I talked to Steve's father at the Memorial in Mammoth; it was just too much to bear but he was handling it. Hideous tragedies.

Acopa USA was being run by Lisa Karafa, Steve's sister. She was doing an astonishing job, given what she had and that she wasn't a climber. She and her husband were running it out of their garage in Vegas, packing and shipping everything themselves and financing inventory on their credit cards.
Then Dario Piana, the owner of Acopa in Mexico shut the factory down.
RIP Acopa, you had a great run. Thanks Lisa and Tim for trying your hardest to keep the memory of John and Steve alive.

Thanks Mal for the facts. Heard that at Desert Mountain Sports and it bummed me greatly. For the time being I'll take care of my shoes.

Maldaly.....this factory shut down was not ALL Dario's happening. I think that point needs to be made. Wouldn't want people to get the impression it was his doing solely. Out of respect for my dear friend John Bachar and Dario Piana, they ALL did what they could to make Acopa work including the Karfa's. It didn't. I hope Dario can get together with other designers and put together another series of GREAT shoes.

Lynn Hill is a great friend of John's yet she had nothing to do with the company. I have no idea where you guys came up with the news of her taking over...
The facts are that Acopa was a great production with too many tragedies. I love my shoes, miss everyone involved...
Yeah, I really miss them.
Steve was the bright star that fell beyond our reach, Michael was the mischievous cheerful light that went dark and John was the heart that gave out. Three big hits that for us who were close was one too many.

damn what a shame.
frustrating to see a company with such great shoes and service go down, while a company with shoes i would barely bring myself to use in the gym thrives (Evolv)

Ana, at the memorial, Lynn made a comment to Dario about stepping in to help out in her podium talk, for what ever the reason it didn't work out. I sure wish some of those designs that John came up with could be carried on. For what ever reason, his shoes always fit me perfectly, whether Boreals or Acopas, he just had it dialed with the fit and Dario and his boys made a great shoe that was well built and between John and the boys in Mexico, they KNEW how to build a great shoe. Viva Acopa!
Peace
