...... wiseguy, jerk, a$$hole? This ought to ruffle some feathers. If not get me tarred and feathered.
Can't say I know him in person. Just his ST persona.
Yes, he can really climb, and is a saver of lives. And he knows his Hindu theology.
But is he not one of the most condescending voices on this site?
It seems the climbers of his era deify him. (Coz's story "Crazy Eyes" in Alpinist 28 is a great example)(a good read). No matter what he says. When he speaks he is very often insulting, and his legion of hero worshippers always pat him on the back when he does. They are all his 'yes men'. He is human too, and not immune to ego inflation.
One thing I can't forget, long ago when I was still lurking and not posting, is when he used the term 'Japs', referring to Japanese people. Kind of like a modern day white man calling a black man 'colored'. Not cool these days.
For such a smart guy his ignorance and insensitivity is glaring.
Since this seems to be the time of the season of the 'whipping post'..........

To post a thread like this and complain about a simple use of a word is bizare.
I've met Werner on 2 occasions (he most likely doesn't remember) and I can tell you for a fact he is one of the nicest most helpful person you will ever meet.
His selflessness is well known as someone who has taken more risk to help others then someone like you will ever know.
His knowledge of climbing and all things mountains is the stuff of legend.
And yes, I think he is one of, if not the, wisest person not just on the Taco but anywhere I have ever met.

werner is also a guy who's had to recover bloated bodies, aka "bloaters", from yosemite rivers while uniformed rangers yelled questionable directives from the bank.....quiet mountain dog...respect.....
