We don't "deify" him, we like and respect him. He's no God, just a good guy.
For any Baby Boomer who grew up with World War II parents, "Japs" was the PC thing to say, they were being generous. That generation, justifiably, had a very bad opinion of that country, and it's people.
Study a little history. The Geneva Convention was never translated into Japenese, in those days.

Yeah, I don't know why this came about. Werner may appear to be 'cranky', but he's just telling you the way it is...man.
Get over it. You people are way too sensitive to honest, personal criticism. And if you were wise, you'd at least give pause to Werner's words, and listen to what he's trying to tell you.
He ain't arrogant or proud. He knows that, but he is held in high regard amongst climbers for a f*#king reason. He climbs routes and saves people who can't climb routes.
What more do ya need???? F*#k!
