survival, If you are implying that Bullwinkle is exploiting the models in his art you are so wrong.
Don't confuse the nude human form in nature with pornography.

As stated earlier, I think the Yabo and DOLT shirts in particular are in extremely poor taste. Knowing just a little about the history of John Yablonski and Bill Feuerer I know they were both troubled souls and chose to end their lives on their own terms. Roper's book Camp 4 even states that Dolt was despondent over his business among other things. So, if he was presumably having trouble making money for himself, how can one feel good about making money off his memory.

And 'word play' is a poor excuse for the Yabo shirts. Shame on the makers and consumers of these items. If you want to honor these visionaries, be original, like they were.

I think a real cool photo of John would be nice enough without hurting anyone's sensibilities.

I don't have any problem with the Dolt t-shirts. Regardless of Dolt's personal issues, if he put a logo out there that he never copyrighted or has fallen out of use, it's in the public domain. I think you're mixing apples and oranges here.

As for the Yabo shirt, my first thought was how is Yabo's estate benefitting from this? While Yabo wasn't a celebrity on par with Elvis or Fred Astaire, he is a pretty well known climbing figure and he hasn't been gone that long. I don't see the shirt as disrespectful, but it does smack of someone benefitting from his personage. Having said that, every time someone sells or publishes a picture of him (think the recent Stonemaster book), are they making a contribution to his estate? I'd have to guess not.

Simon, I get it, but Bullwinkle et al is right as usual. If you wanna put a band-aid on this, you could agree to donate 100% of the profits to the climbing community. I'll take some and even wear a t-shirt if you require.

There has been some criticism of whether the "Yabo says" tee-shirt is representative of what Yabo might actually say or whether it is tongue in cheek or whether it is something which even needs to be said at all (i.e. it is so obvious that it goes without saying)

and now we have leb weighing in on a topic that involves yabo.

approaching the nadir.

I object to the tone from Smith and Cosgrove.
They seem to think that IHP is hiding his identity.
He has revealed his identity as often as cos and the kid.
Come on, you don't post as Scott Cosgrove. You don't state constantly that
that is your name. I know that your avatar and your name match because
I pay a little attention.
If you paid any attention, you would
remember his name. You would have noticed many of his past connections
which he has written of in the past.
Get over the crazy notion that he is hiding something.

Are we having fun yet?

...Yabo... was... not into capitalism at all

And yet he grabbed at the chance to make money climbing nude.

WTF???? total bullsh#t, exploition. . .

And yet you can read about John's climbing nude in Dean's book. Dean, did you get john's permission to publish nude photos of him?

...Bullwinkle et al is right as usual...

Wow, that must be nice to be so perfect.

All cost and profits should be clearly land (sic) out

Let me park my Bugatti first then I'll have my staff look into this. In the meantime, let's ask others how much their products cost and where "all" the "profits" are going.

...if you have talked to Yabo's family...

Yep. In fact, I would feel safe in saying I am probably the only person on this site who has talked to his family... all one surviving member who happily sent me photos, letters and other memorabilia for safe keeping. I think I'll call her again this afternoon...

Perhaps I should post my length and girth too so it can be compared in a schlong measuring debate. I always thought coz was a reason. No wait, that's cuz.

Love ya all!

And my name is Simon King.

Both of John's parents are dead. I thought people knew that. The only surviving member of the family is his sister who I have had several conversations with over the past year.

You always talk like you're some movie star, IHP, your people you kill me!

Uhhh... references to that please?

Mountain dog,
survival, If you are implying that Bullwinkle is exploiting the models in his art you are so wrong.

I didn't say a word about pornography. And yes his models are alive and they can give permission, and even enjoy it. He is still exploiting the nude form in nature. If you think people would buy the same numbers of calendars of those people in the same poses in baggy clothing, think again.

We tend to idealize our old friends too much. The Yabo I knew would do about anything for 50 bucks, including swimming over a waterfall.
If there's a big controversy, then Simon can pull the shirt, fine.

But for a bunch of people to come off all righteous about this thing is bullsh*t too.

Gotta go with Survival on this one. Yabo would have a laugh about the fuss this one was causing. Who gets the proceeds from millions of Che t-shirts?
