Good stuff is getting buried in the kind of cr#p that people like "locker" puts out in his SEVENTEEN THOUSAND POSTS.

if you add up all the words you've posted vs Locker's, you would have him beat by an astounding margin...

Nice one TKingsbury!

And I'd like to echo Mighty Hiker!

"In terms of anti-social behaviour, perhaps we should talk about how women on SuperTopo are treated, both on and off forum. Particularly young women. Harassment is a polite way to describe some of it."

This trolling business is all good fun but when it comes to "harassing" women, young and old, it stops being trolling and it stops being fun. Seriously, go climb a rock or something.

Someday I hope a sociologist follows ST for a few months as a lurker, and then writes about what he/she observes.

I am an "armchair" sociologist. I observed long ago that peoples internet age and maturity is significantly lower than their true age. I devised a simple formula for calculating your internet age/maturity:

N/((1/2)*N)

N=Age in human years

For example, I am 43 years old, so my internet/maturity age would be thus:

43/((1/2)*43))= 2 yrs. old.

That's about right for me...

Seriously, how many women posting here are under the age of 30?

I can't think of a single one...

I forgot. Put me down as opposed to any moderator, apart from self-moderating, however clumsy it is at times, and of course the decrees of the great CMac.

As for young women. There are some under 30s who post here, although I wouldn't necessarily say one must be under 30 to be a young woman. t*r is one of the few who is known as such, but there are others. There are probably 5 - 10 times as many lurkers as posters, and I suspect the proportion of lurkers who are female is considerably higher than the proportion of posters.

Also, I recently gave a talk at the mountain film festival here. 150 - 200 people were there. Somewhat based on the "Climbing at Squamish in the 1970s" thread. (There were also another speaker, and films, that evening.) I attended five or six nights of VIMFF altogether. Several young women approached me during the festival, said they saw my talk, and mentioned that they'd seen the SuperTopo thread. They lurk, but don't post - put off by the misogynist behaviour of some, and the occasional lack of civility.

As a long time lurker that has only recently started occasionally posting, I have to throw my .02 in with a resounding NO WAY!

I have often heard this site referred to as a campfire, where climber discuss a range of topics, not limited to just climbing. I like that analogy, and would further add that I have yet to sit around a campfire where a moderator is present. I have been around campfires where I did not like the company or the direction of the conversation, in which case I spoke up and / or left. Everyone here has that choice.

All this talk about liability and issues with "outsiders" seeing the photos is just juvenile. The photos are either funny or offensive, depending on how you look at it. However, the only person whose reputation might be damaged is the author of the photo. These pics do NOTHING to damage the reputation of the individuals portrayed. Any assertion to the contrary is just pure BS! If you are really concerned about your reputation and how you would appear to potential employers, then you should quit posting crazy crap. As a former hiring manager for a fortune 500 company, I would 100% dismiss the pics but be very concerned about the content of many of Rokjox's posts.

Let me be clear; I don't see a problem with the site, just a problem with Rokjox. I don't want a moderator on this site and am offended that Rokjox would try to make all of us pay for his issues by burdening us with a moderator / editor / censor / internet nanny.

i would like to throw my hat in the ring as well. under my loving stewardship, this site could finally blossom into the gentle flower it was clearly meant to be.

all moderators are created equal, but some moderators are more equal than others.

This is the most hypocritical thread ever

If you feel a forum should be moderated go play on one which already is.

Instead another useless non climbing thread has clogged up the good stuff on ST.

Tami, I thought no one was supposed to talk about your hump, just pretend it wasn't there and not get caught staring?

I'm a moderator at another climbing site, and its often a thankless time suck. DMT oughta retract his offer and just tell us more stories and make more pithy observations. Not that Dingus isn't exactly the sort of person who'd do a good job at the post; likely his work would be largely invisible, and its not a bad thing to have someone around from time to time with the keys to the machine, but if you follow Anders' Commandments and you stay out of the politics muck, there just isn't much that needs moderation.

How much fun will it be arguing about who gets to be moderator? We could easily chew through a couple of months on that one!

My vote goes to Steve Grossman.
