Lots of folks crying in agony that any climbers would do such a thing...but gear is valueable...suppose it wasn't climbers?

They are going to hit you again as soon as you replace your stuff. I've seen it many times. Its what they do because they know you think you are safe now. Trust me, you aren't.

Bump and semi update.

Bad news first. Insurance will not cover theft. Turns out I only had liability insurance. I thought insurance was like car insurance, all aspects are covered, just depends how much coverage and how big your deductible is. Biggest mistake of my life, ever.

Other fact, not sure if this is good or bad. Alarm went off, but Sheriff's station was never notified about the alarm. Either when I switched phone companies they messed with the line, or the people I use to monitor the alarm messed up. I pay a place in Redmond for the alarm, and they sub-contract it out to a bigger place in Portland to monitor. I don't know if anyone is a lawyer, but if anyone is at fault, would it be the right move to sue? I don't want to be that "guy" who sues....

Some Good news, the restaurant across the street has a camera that faces the parking lot and pretty much the door they broke in through. So once the police get the footage they should have a good lead. They'll have how many people, the make and model of the vehicle and a license plate. So thieves if you're reading this, just hand back the stuff, all will be forgiven and we'll just forget about this.

p.s. this has been posted on rockclimbing.com, mountain project, super topo, smith rock.com and cascade climbers. If anyone wants to cross post this to any other sites, i don't mind, just couldn't think of any others that get as much traffic.

The theft alone is bad enough, but to not be covered by insurance and then the alarm co. fuks up? That's a stout kick in the balls! Best of luck to you in nailing the bastards. Awesome that there was a camera. Post this up over at Summitpost.org. The more places you can get the word out the better.

Oh - hope the video gives the creeps away. Still a painful experience for your shop. What a difficult situation.

About the alarm company - I think you will probably have to look into gaining some compensation if the error in response was not on your end. After all, if they did fail at fulfilling the contract, they are liable. Alarm company is like an insurance policy; we don't pay for insurance and then feel bad when we have to submit a claim. It's business.

I feel a little bad(but not all that much) about suggesting that it is possible someone, somehwere, connected with the alarm company might just have a hand in the burglary. No offense against security/locksmiths or the industry in general. No doubt we have some in that field right here on STopo.

Check the contract to see what you've agreed to/what their liability is....

I think happiegirl has a point. I was ripped off at a big hotel in Palm Springs. Security camera right by my vehicle. Head of security dick said the camera wasn't on. Turned out later to be a theft ring in the hotel involving security and other hotel employees. I would definitely follow up on the alarm thing or lack thereof.

Wait and see what the cops come up with.

If they draw a dead end look into getting the alarm company to compensate you. You pay them money for a service and they were negligent costing you lots of money.

I wouldn't consider it a frivolous lawsuit (unless you're claiming 'pain and suffering' and additional money). Just get the money back.

1. No forgiving and forgetting - not that it's very likely that the thieves will return what was stolen, anonymously or otherwise.

2. Once you have all the facts, talk with a suitable lawyer about whether you have a case of negligence on the part of the alarm or telephone company.

3. Post the news to every climbers' website in North America you can find out about, including those back east and in Canada. A knowledgeable source once informed me that stolen equipment of any real value often ends up far away. Less chance of getting caught, less chance of consequences if one is.

4. Don't give up.

I have to echo what he says about gathering the facts and then going to an attorney. Spend the money and get yourself a good contract lawyer and you might see daylight out the other end of this.

I have heard from several folks and found the thread on several sites right away. I wonder if there is an efficient way for notifying the gyms? There are a lot of eyes and ears there in this rainy season.

Given the critical nature of climbing gear, I would never buy it from someone I don't know or troll Craig's List for hardware. I hope this guy is caught, and I hope that low life quickly figure out that there is not much of a secondary market for climbing hardware and ropes.

Hi, that really sucks, good luck finding who took everything. I will keep an eye out on ebay and craigslist for anything fishy.

That's sucks about lack of theft insurance. Being a business owner is hard stuff, and this is a super tough way to learn a lesson. Don't let it be a business ending screw up; take it as a push in the right direction to get more educated and organized about operations.

I hope you've got the time to devote to working with the sherriff. But, you're not going to be able to restock a lot of that stuff if you get it back anyway. Time to think about a good promotion or sale. If you can sell $100 of gear to half of the climbers that trip up to Smith this winter, you'll be crushing it.

And really? yal think 'climbers' wouldn't do this? Everybody 'climbs' these days.

I have to echo that you need to look carefully at former employees and possibly even aquantances. I have had money, credit card numbers, instruments, etc. stolen by patients and employees.

Bump/ Update.

Yesterday I was on the phone all day calling gyms, climbing shops and consignment stores from the bay area to Vancouver, Canada. I sent them a list and a flyer of what brands were stolen and who to contact if they have any information. I didn't contact many gyms in the bay, just the touchstone group ones. So if any of you want to give out more flyers to the gyms in that area or even farther south, please do. I will not mind at all.

I'm looking into the old employees, and would be shocked if any of them took it. There's only one I can think of and that person lives in southern CA. But I guess this would be worth the trip. I've only owned the shop since August, so I don't have ex-employees.

I'm still looking into the alarm company, and am waiting for some more information to come. I have to look over the contract, and contact some other 3rd party to get a second opinion. It looks like this might be a lead, just need more information. I have been in contact with my lawyer about all of this.

Still waiting on the security tape, oi, it's taking forever.

I see they have some empty sections but still list goods in others. Wondering if this coincides with the burglary? At any rate, if people are looking to help out a bit to get back in the saddle, maybe if they're looking for some item he carries and has in stock....
