I've posted this all over the place and figure it won't hurt to post here. Sorry if you've read this on other sites.

Hey everyone,

I'm letting everyone know this, just in case someone runs into someone that's selling gear that just doesn't sound right.

Last night my shop was broken into, and everything was taken and I really do mean everything. I haven't done an actually inventory yet. But ballpark, 50 draws, 100 carabiners, 14 ropes, 4 sets of cams, 5 sets of nuts, 10 down jackets, etc etc etc etc. So please, please, keep an eye out for anything suspicious if you're buying something second hand from someone. I would appreciate it.

If anyone finds out anything here is some contact information. You can either call me, 541-923-6207. Or the best bet is the local sheriff's office. Their phone number is 541-693-6911. The Sheriff in charge of the case is Gary Cima, but you can talk to anyone else there as well.

I'm working on the inventory right now, and will have a pretty long list of items stolen, so you know what to be on the look out for. Thanks for all the support.

Thanks,
Eric

I really liked that shop as well. When I checked out Smith on my travels many moons ago, the staff there was very friendly and gave beta freely. Can't remember the guys name.

That's where I got my super huge, 123 camalot-sized Rocks. Love those pieces!

Hopefully there was some kind of insurance?

Bump and semi update.

Bad news first. Insurance will not cover theft. Turns out I only had liability insurance. I thought insurance was like car insurance, all aspects are covered, just depends how much coverage and how big your deductible is. Biggest mistake of my life, ever.

Other fact, not sure if this is good or bad. Alarm went off, but Sheriff's station was never notified about the alarm. Either when I switched phone companies they messed with the line, or the people I use to monitor the alarm messed up. I pay a place in Redmond for the alarm, and they sub-contract it out to a bigger place in Portland to monitor. I don't know if anyone is a lawyer, but if anyone is at fault, would it be the right move to sue? I don't want to be that "guy" who sues....

Some Good news, the restaurant across the street has a camera that faces the parking lot and pretty much the door they broke in through. So once the police get the footage they should have a good lead. They'll have how many people, the make and model of the vehicle and a license plate. So thieves if you're reading this, just hand back the stuff, all will be forgiven and we'll just forget about this.

Thanks for all the support everyone.

The theft alone is bad enough, but to not be covered by insurance and then the alarm co. fuks up? That's a stout kick in the balls! Best of luck to you in nailing the bastards. Awesome that there was a camera. Post this up over at Summitpost.org. The more places you can get the word out the better.

Oh - hope the video gives the creeps away. Still a painful experience for your shop. What a difficult situation.

About the alarm company - I think you will probably have to look into gaining some compensation if the error in response was not on your end. After all, if they did fail at fulfilling the contract, they are liable. Alarm company is like an insurance policy; we don't pay for insurance and then feel bad when we have to submit a claim. It's business.

I feel a little bad(but not all that much) about suggesting that it is possible someone, somehwere, connected with the alarm company might just have a hand in the burglary. No offense against security/locksmiths or the industry in general. No doubt we have some in that field right here on STopo.

Check the contract to see what you've agreed to/what their liability is....

I think happiegirl has a point. I was ripped off at a big hotel in Palm Springs. Security camera right by my vehicle. Head of security dick said the camera wasn't on. Turned out later to be a theft ring in the hotel involving security and other hotel employees. I would definitely follow up on the alarm thing or lack thereof.

Wait and see what the cops come up with.

If they draw a dead end look into getting the alarm company to compensate you. You pay them money for a service and they were negligent costing you lots of money.

I wouldn't consider it a frivolous lawsuit (unless you're claiming 'pain and suffering' and additional money). Just get the money back.

1. No forgiving and forgetting - not that it's very likely that the thieves will return what was stolen, anonymously or otherwise.

2. Once you have all the facts, talk with a suitable lawyer about whether you have a case of negligence on the part of the alarm or telephone company.

3. Post the news to every climbers' website in North America you can find out about, including those back east and in Canada. A knowledgeable source once informed me that stolen equipment of any real value often ends up far away. Less chance of getting caught, less chance of consequences if one is.

4. Don't give up.

The news is getting out very effectively. I heard from a couple folks, and passed it on, too. The thread on Cascadeclimbers has most of the info:

http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/934319/1

I have heard from several folks and found the thread on several sites right away. I wonder if there is an efficient way for notifying the gyms? There are a lot of eyes and ears there in this rainy season.

Given the critical nature of climbing gear, I would never buy it from someone I don't know or troll Craig's List for hardware. I hope this guy is caught, and I hope that low life quickly figure out that there is not much of a secondary market for climbing hardware and ropes.

That's sucks about lack of theft insurance. Being a business owner is hard stuff, and this is a super tough way to learn a lesson. Don't let it be a business ending screw up; take it as a push in the right direction to get more educated and organized about operations.

I hope you've got the time to devote to working with the sherriff. But, you're not going to be able to restock a lot of that stuff if you get it back anyway. Time to think about a good promotion or sale. If you can sell $100 of gear to half of the climbers that trip up to Smith this winter, you'll be crushing it.

And really? yal think 'climbers' wouldn't do this? Everybody 'climbs' these days.

Bump/ Update.

Yesterday I was on the phone all day calling gyms, climbing shops and consignment stores from the bay area to Vancouver, Canada. I sent them a list and a flyer of what brands were stolen and who to contact if they have any information. I didn't contact many gyms in the bay, just the touchstone group ones. So if any of you want to give out more flyers to the gyms in that area or even farther south, please do. I will not mind at all.

I'm looking into the old employees, and would be shocked if any of them took it. There's only one I can think of and that person lives in southern CA. But I guess this would be worth the trip. I've only owned the shop since August, so I don't have ex-employees.

I'm still looking into the alarm company, and am waiting for some more information to come. I have to look over the contract, and contact some other 3rd party to get a second opinion. It looks like this might be a lead, just need more information. I have been in contact with my lawyer about all of this.

Still waiting on the security tape, oi, it's taking forever.

Again thanks for all support, everyone.

Best Wishes to the Redpoint guys...really sorry to hear about this. Haven't seen any brand new gear show up for sale in our area, but we will keep a lookout.

It was probably some meth-heads..

I need some new offset aliens for my planned return to the Captain this year. If you got 'em I'll order from you. I hope you guys are gonna recover. If you're open I'll stop by sometime Feb13-20 when I'm in Bend. I'll be in Bend for a week hoping for some good snow up at Bachelor.

So is it just me or does it seem a bit odd that the alarm, which I'm guessing was a silent alarm, did function and go off, yet the burglar(s) decided to hang out and clear out the showcases, clothing racks, ropes off of the wall, dvds, frisbees, cliff bars... wtf clif bars??, 36 pairs of cheap ass sunglasses?, in total about 854 items (yes I counted) that would most likely fill a ford cargo van IF it was all well organized. I know because I can hardly fit all my crap in my subaru when I live at Smith out in the grasslands for 2 weeks every summer.

Anyway, my point is, based on the facts of the job, it must have taken at least 15 - 25 minutes (with 2 people, maybe 3 -- 2 grabbers 1 lookout/loader), and these guys must have known the following;

1. Terrebonne is not the most crackin place after midnight in the winter, even on the only main road that goes through the town
2. If/when the alarm went off, the signal would not reach the police
3. Been somewhat familiar with the store layout (if time minimization was important to them)
4.

Like it matters at all, here are my thoughts:
If they did not know there was an alarm, they would probably have limited their time to 5 - 10 minutes maximum. Considering that the county sheriff's office is 361 ft from Redpoint (I don't know if an officer is stationed there for night shift though). That would have taken at least 4 people and multiple vehicles to accomplish this. Considering that the county sheriff's office is 361 ft from Redpoint.

They were not that good considering they parked in front of a 24 hr video camera.

They stole things that have next to zero resale value, i.e. chalk, tape, copper heads, clif bars etc... To me that means they were stupid or angry, and not concerned with how long this job took (meaning they knew the alarm was not going to matter somehow).

With all this stuff they have 3 choices:
Keep it forever, Give it away, Use it, Sell it
The first two aren't likely, and No climber who resorts to stealing things would use all of this stuff and never sell anything. Basically, they will be selling this stuff eventually.

They didn't seem to know what is worth what, and they took A LOT. Therefore maybe they were paid by someone that does know what this stuff is worth. That means that the people selling this stuff are probably familiar with climbing, and are not local to central oregon, or probably the rest of the state. And they have probably read through all of these posts too.

Fortunately, most of the money making stuff that was stolen was hardware, tents, or other expensive and well made gear that all individually bear batch numbers. As an engineer, I know how important it is for companies like BD, Metolius, and Petzel to mark each piece of gear with a unique number that tells of what material batch is was made from in the event of a recall due to material defects. That means that if gear is purchased from one of these fools, they're screwed because it can all be traced right back though redpoint as the original purchaser. Considering there were 854 items taken, and about 60% of them are probably numbered, there are over 500 very good chances to catch them.

That said, if you purchase some gear that came from a private party and is on that list in America over the next year, look into where it came from. It should be fairly easy to do, and is worth a lot to Redpoint.

Erik,
Dude, how did they get in? was the place trashed at all?
I am so very sorry to hear about this. If I wasn't in school right now, I'd come up and help you out with whatever I could.

You should set up a donation link on your site through paypal. You can do it through your web hoster usually.

Anyway, keep your spirits up, may God bless your efforts and i will see you this summer!

P.S. I will send this out to all of the climbing guides that I work with, and the gyms down here in central California. We're on the hunt.

This is ABSOLUTELY insane! I used to manage the shop back in the day and I love it there! Smith Rock is where I basically began climbing. I'm sad to see this happened to such a great establishment... if there's anything I can do to help, please let me know.

Any updates one why the sheriff's station never got notified? Do we know whether it's the fault of the phone company or the alarm company yet?

How about the footage from the restaurant across the street? Has that been able to be of any help yet?

Smith Rock is currently my favourite outdoor climbing destination. I've been pouring through Alan Watts' newest guidebook. I'd hate to lose Redpoint Climbers Supply!

I posted an alert on Craigslist in the S.F. Bay Area.

I'm thinking that based on the the large size of the climbing community here, as well as the heavy utilization of Craigslist (it did start here after all) PLUS the the fact the selling the stuff locally in the Smith Rock area would all but impossible, it's as likely to end up here as anywhere.
For those live in areas where you have a good size CL, post something similar in your local area.
Let's not give these scum anywhere to hide or profit out of this.
We the climbing community are in the best position to help here.

A weary welcome to the club.
Sorry to hear your news, my shop was burglarized three times.
Don't just look for climbers in the Valley to turn up with the stuff, my gear ended up assisting taggers to access freeway overpasses in LA.
Check with your local Sherriff gang unit, and let them know what the stuff looks like.
Meanwhile, hire an attorney that specializes in collecting from insurance companies to deal with your claim, or you will never get the money to get the gear to stay in business, then you will have lost the gear, your shop, and your job.

hope you fare better than i did,
Ed

edit, ps build a fort!
sink pipes in front and fill em with cement. then they can't drive a stolen car into it.

Someone told me they saw this thread resurrected, so figured I would chime in.

No, no one ever got caught. No, the insurance never came through.

Yes, I'm still here and don't plan on closing the shop anytime soon.

Sorry if you ever came into the shop and I was short with you when you asked about the break in. I get asked a lot, and it still stings every time.

If you want to make sure small businesses like this are still around, please support small businesses. Pay in cash, if you can, that 2% per transaction fee for credit cards stink. Every little bit counts, even those $1 stickers.

If you come to Smith, stop in, say hi. I think we're pretty nice people in here. Hope to see you out on the rock!

Thanks,
Eric

I really hope that Dwolla or some alternative reasonable payment system takes hold. Visa, Mastercard and their bailed out, too big to fail, corrupt vampire squid partners in crime (BoA, Citi, JPM) impose a huge tax on our economy. They are worse than Ticketmaster - and Paypal is just as bad.

Eric,

Redpoint has been a staple of the Smith Rock climbing scene my entire lifetime... we won't let you go under. Keep up the good work! I'll keep on buying stuff when ever I can afford to do so, and hopefully I can get a few clients this year to come in and do the same....

See you soon!

Eric, sorry that the perps were never caught and the insurance failed you. I'd give you my business, but Dublin to Portland could be a costly exercise. However, the next time I am in the locale (haven't been to Smith Rocks since 1976), I'll give you some biz.

Stzzo, I see what you are saying but Argon does have a point, and it is increasingly difficult to book anything (tickets, train, theater, etc etc) nowadays without some sort of credit/debit card.

Yeah IMO and I know many others feel the select guide was just a ploy to make money published by outsiders who saw a market for it, while Alan was working his ass off trying to churn out a solid product. Sure the idea it makes sense, but if Alan had gotten his book out when he originally said he would have I doubt the select guide would have ever came out. Not that I own it or anything but as far as I remember half the pages are ad's if I recall correctly... not a magazine but a guide book... hmmm

Plus, no sales tax in Oregon.
