I think Hans is up there. I believe he is like 79 times up The Nose plus his other routes.
Man, I haven't climbed anything 79 times.

Do they have to have been technical climbing ascents? Perhaps someone has ascended it by hiking more times - it's a good walk via several different routes, and a nice viewpoint. Yosemite being what it is, there's probably someone who really likes hiking up the Captain.

Check out the thread:
http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/413017/How_Many_El_Cap_Routes_have_You_Done

But the most direct method is to look at Hans' table:
http://speedclimb.com/yosemite/compare.htm

It shows Hans Florine with 142 ascents of El Cap (26 different routes; 81 ascents were on the Nose),
Steve Gerberding with 108 [now 109] ascents (57 different routes), and
Steve Schneider with 100 [now 108] ascents (33 different routes).

Steve and Hans teamed up on Dihedral in late 2002, and it was the 100th El Cap ascent for both of them. They're each well past 100 by now.

So, what do you all think of Hans' list? Definitive?

"So, what do you all think of Hans' list? Definitive?"

If there is a little "1" in the right hand column, then this means that Hans checked with the person in the row, otherwise he just took a guess.

The top few rows are all correct, except for Erik whose numbers are certainly higher. Erik wrote here:

http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=413017&tn=150&mr=10

in June, 2008 that he had done 46 separate routes, and there have been three wall seasons since then. So he might well be at 50 different routes by now! He also mentions that Hans' website is stuck on him at 42 routes, so Erik needs to email Hans with an update. It's worth clicking on the link above, if only to discover the correct spelling of Erik's name, which is a bigger mystery than his El Cap route count.

The original topic is "Who has the most El Cap ascents?"

Not who's done the most different routes.

This topic here is who's run up El Cap the most.

If you did east buttress of El Cap 1000 times you will win.

Win what?

1) hans florine 142, according to his website
2) Steve Gerberding 109(last was solo of On the Waterfront last summer)
3) Steve schneider 108

So yeah, i'm just one behind gerby, and will hopefully be tied with him in a couple of weeks. i would stress that i am not in a competition with gerberding, but i should pass him up this year as he lives in josh, and i live in oakland and am thus more active. I'll never approach his number of different routes, i think he's done 57 now, while i've only done 35.

East Buttress don't count. Hiking don't count.

Grade VI counts.

The EB could be a grade VI if you move slow enough.

Does that mean we throw out the Nose since many do it sub 48 hours nowadays? That makes it a grade V.

What about the West Face? A common one day trip but a grade VI in some books.

Just yanking...

in my book, and i believe hans and i are in agreement, is that the west face counts, but the east buttress does not. the west face is a big 2000 foot wall, and certainly would take a party multiple days if they were hauling. shipoopoi

Concur with above. I did knott include my ascent of East Butt in my count, but did so for West Face.

Werner's right, I don't really belong on this thread!

pete, you certainly belong on this thread! after all, what the F@#k do you do, just come down every year and do more routes, without any repeats. honestly, i have the highest respect for your el cap list. you are a big time wall climber in my book. The fact that you are candian, with all the extra traveling makes it especially proud. don't get cocky though, LOL, steve
