Why is radio such a natural, productive fit for the right?

Has anyone here read David Foster Wallace's essay, "Host"? He has a well crafted answer to this very question, if I remember correctly. If I can find the essay, I'll try to post it up.

a few of Rush's undeniable truths of life-

1. There is a distinct singular American culture - rugged individualism
and self-reliance - which made America great.
2. The vast majority of the rich in this country did not inherit their
wealth; they earned it. They are the country's achievers, producers,
and job creators.
3. No nation has ever taxed itself into prosperity.
4. Evidence refutes liberalism.
5. There is no such thing as a New Democrat.
6. The Earth's eco-system is not fragile.
7. Character matters; leadership
descends from character.
8. The most beautiful thing about a tree is what you do with it after you
cut it down.

The Achilles heel of conservative philosophy, particularly the libertarian aspect of that philosophy, is its reliance on a grossly utilitarian calculus.

The natural efficiency of a free market is the grail of conservative talk radio, but the problem is that, though that natural efficiency can, perhaps, create a thriving economic engine, it can’t create a civilization.

Historically, the finest things any civilization creates, the things that make a civilization in the first place, the things worth living and dying for, these things have not necessarily been a function of utility, or free market efficiency.

Instead they have been things of complete uselessness. The plays of Shakespeare, the music of Mozart, the paintings of Michelangelo, the philosophy of Socrates, what a society produces that is superfluous to utility or the needs of the market place often determines our understanding of its quality.

When a society constructs itself in such a way as to eliminate the opportunity of the useless, when the free market with its base constitution of greed becomes the only arbiter of what may or may not exist in a society, then that society is not likely a civilization.

The free market demands efficiency; civilization requires generosity and largess.

A few of Lush's undeniable truths:

!. Family is important, that is why I divorced 3 times
2. All drug users are losers--except el Rushbo who only ABUSES prescription medication obtained illegally.
3. The US Military should always be supported--except by me, who used the family doctor to get me out of Vietnam service.
4. Taxing the rich is not good for this country, OR my pocketbook.
5. There are NO good Liberals, except for those that buy my hawked products and boost my ratings.
6. The right to life is precious, as long as I don't have to have any of the little bastards around me.
7. I am always right 99.3% of the time, except when I speak.
8. The NFL is my passion--they love me sooo much that they fired me for my off-color remarks on ESPN and shunned me from ever buying into a franchise.

LEB/DMT, the reason the conservative shows have a bigger audience is because the left wingers have educations and jobs and are at work during the day. The trailer park dwelling welfare collectors in the red states just don't have anything better to do than listen to El Rushbo.

There are two possible variations on success:

1. You are religious. Success is getting to heaven.

2. You have a total belief in evolution. You have spread your genetics to more offspring than others of your species (by living long enough though good genetics to do so).

There is no other success. Anything else is just a measure of success of one of those two things. money begets survival and sex. Following strict religious guidelines for your actions begets getting to heaven. There is more flexility there since sex and offstring do not usually hurt ones chances in many religions.

So has Rush attained success? How many kids does he have? Does God like him? I don't think I can answer either right now but he certainly has the opportunity for non-religious success based on his being still alive (still alive) and on his ability to attract a mate with lots of money.

I am a dismal failure since I have one kid and am an atheist.

"Rush is a very polarizing character."

To be polarized, you need a plus and a minus. Rush is polarizing - but so are Keith Oberman, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Nancy Pelosi, Barney Franks, etc. - and Glenn Beck, etc. And scanning the posts it appears that LEB can be polarizing, too.

The problem is that both sides of the media (and internet blogs like this topic) have "Jerry Springerized" debate in this country. It seems like they often set up a situation where you know there are going to be strong emotions which will come to "blows," and guaranteed to NOT be a respectful exchange of ideas. Perhaps it is successful rating-wise because Americans like a good fight, maybe more than we like an honest debate - and why shows like Rush Limbaugh, Keith Oberman, etc. are "successful."

It seems it is becoming impossible to have a civil, logical debate backed by facts - this is perhaps the greatest threat to our democracy, a threat that goes way beyond terrorism or global warming.

Just because somebody has a different point of view, different perspective, or different idea than yours doesn't make them an idiot. Why can't we listen to each other, and disagree without calling each other names?

Neither side has a monopoly on great or horrible ideas. We can only achieve the full potential of our democracy by taking the best ideas that both sides have to offer. Locking one side up in a closed room is not the way to come up with a solution which benefits the majority of people!

Remember, many people would consider people who Big Wall climb to be "idiots." I personally know many Big Wall climbers and the majority are thoughtful, knowledgeable, and great people - who acknowledge and manage the inherit risks that the sport entails.

O.K. - So here's a 5.11d challenge: Listen to Rush Limbaugh's program for 1 hour. Some of the things he says are out there, and some make sense. Count how many times he uses a personally insulting term (e.g. idiot) for people he disagrees with. Listen to Keith Oberman for an hour. Some of the things he says are out there, and some make sense. Count how many times he uses a personally insulting term (e.g. idiot) for people he disagrees with. (OK - this is 5.12b for those who called Rush an idiot!)

To be respected, you must give respect. To be listened to, you must first listen to others.

I haven't looked at the ol' SuperTaco much for a few weeks, apart from bumping my own thread (which is climbing-related)....

and here I find LEB posting again! Which helps to remind me, that the parts of the universe I want to be in, cyber- or otherwise, are the parts without this sort of claptrap, no matter whether it is the Troll or the Mule who is talking.

One of the good things about climbing, very few conversations like this amongst those of us lashed to the sides of sheer cliffs.

Carry on....
