Need I say more. I am not a perfect example but, for christ sake I think a number of people need to just step away form the computer and take a break. Go spend some time outside.

I am sure I will get some flak for this but right now I just dont care

If the people who post political threads posted only one such thread a week,
the political threads on this forum would probably be reduced by at least 80%.

But NOOOO, it's their duty to ENLIGHTEN us with their superior wisdom, is it knott?

? does not wisdom mean ya don't sell or sling it all over Hell?
or at least imply it? I don't know much, but I do like going on about climbing & wanderin' & fishin'& general groovin'....
That's my 'platform'....especially if it floats on prime waters......You, Me, & Slakkey, Knott, we're all that survived the onslaught. So far.

HardmanKnott, the political posters will not change one "mind" here on the Taco. So say it once and lose it. Get on to pushing the "good stuff" and helping neub's like me succeed. Just a thought from outer space and planet x.

I pretty much gave up the fight several years ago - this post sums it up pretty well:

I don't look at this as strictly a climbing forum. If you want that, there's always rc.noob or mountainproject.

I look at this as more like a campfire. Anything and everything open for discussion with interesting folks.

I see this yearning coming up all the time here. “Wouldn’t they just stop all the yammering. Make the ants stop crawling in here! Please G*d or someone, take this higher.”

And I share it, this yearning. Obviously.

But as the incredible John Vawter said maybe about 8 years ago here or at rec.climbing, it’s basically a cocktail party here and at other forums: all kinds of characters, constant interruptions, blazing loyalties between old comrades and the same with people that have just met. Apparent hatreds between (usually guys) climbers who actually agree without knowing it.

It must seem crazy and many of us hope for purity but in the end, it’s fun and a lot gets accomplished despite all of us and our cacophony. How could it be any different....do you know? Should there be a forum monitor 24/7? You and I don’t think so, right? So we go with this wriggling mess that is semi-democratic and quite free-play but we can still bitch when ever it takes our fancy.

Make no mistake, ST gets off the track all the time, just like a campfire evening. And it is good and reflects what we are experiencing elsewhere. And have for more than 50 years.

Here's a small excerpt from my extremely long-winded post linked above:

Oct 1, 2004, 11:18am PT

Finally, I never understood why people would want to carry on political dialogs
with a group of climbers, on a climbing-specific forum.

For those of you who think posting political stuff to a group of climbers
is a good idea, there's a much, much better place do do that.
It's the Community forum on Rockclimbing.com.
As of this morning, there are already dozens of posts about the debate last night,
all of them made by climbers. You will reach a vastly larger number
of climbers--on an order of magnitude. Check it out. Way more bang for the buck!

Personally, I would recommend checking out Usenet. Learning how to use
a newsreader program isn't all that difficult, and is what we had to use before
Gore invented the internet.

It is still a vastly superior medium than any Web-based forum;
you need to use it to see what I mean.

Here are some groups I found, using just the keyword Politics:

alt.politics
alt.politics.bush
alt.politics.economics
alt.politics.elections
alt.politics.gw-bush
alt.politics.immigration
alt.politics.liberalism
alt.politics.media
alt.politics.radical-left
alt.politics.republicans
alt.politics.socialism
alt.politics.socialism.democratic
alt.politics.socialism.libertarian
alt.politics.usa
alt.politics.usa.constitution
alt.politics.usa.constitution.gun-rights
alt.politics.usa.republican
soc.politics
talk.politics.guns
talk.politics.libertarian
talk.politics.mideast
talk.politics.misc
talk.politics.theory
us.politics
us.politics.elections
wash.politics

There are probably thousands more...

If this is all too complicated for those of you who think programing a VCR
is akin to rocket-science, you can always read Usenet using the Google Groups
interface. I must warn you--and Dingus will attest--that using web-based Google
instead of a newsreader is like driving a golf cart on a race-track instead of
a Lamborghini Diablo, or getting a massage in a wetsuit instead of being nude.

Try it, you'll like it!

Well, I just returned for a 2 week trip from Washington State. First week was spent spending some time sailing. Second week was spent some time on Mt Rainier. Like I said I am not a perfect example of one who contirbutes to the forum on subjects just related to climbing. But, when I cam home and read the majority of the front page Related to Politics It just made me wonder why people think this is their own personal soap Box. Yes people have a right to their own opinion and yes this forum is more like a virtual capfire than most but the point is. it is just interesting to me that for what is considered a community of people who for the most part spend a part of thier life outside. spend so much of their time on the computer. writting about stuff that for the most part others really have little or no interest in.

Maybe I am wrong.

Do not ever mistake this cesspool with a campfire. If one third of the shiit talked on here was presented as such at a real campfire, there would be a lot of guys sleeping it off horizontal style in the dirt. FACT.

Just remember..........you can always post up with a climbing related thread!!! It's called independent will !!!! All these threads complaining about no climbing related threads just becomes part of the problem.
