So I've been hearing about the governators budget proposed list of california state park closures. After a little searching I found what appears to be a link to the list. FYI Castle Rock is in the lovely list.

Anyone have any idea what they do when they 'close' a park. Is climbing at CSRP going to become like out of bounds camping in the valley? Or if they close it will Miles Standish (local LEO) be laid off?

The link follows as:

I also read this morning that hikers (and presumably climbers) will still be able to access several parks, provided that they are willing to do without restrooms, ranger rescues, and are willing to pack up their trash.

Don't know about whether or not there will be gate closures.

If what I said in the first paragraph pans out, and the second paragraph doesn't happen, there might be some good things that come from the closures, such as lighter crowds.

They're bluffing.

We should call the bluff.

Tell them: "Go ahead. Close the parks. When's the next election? We'll deal with who's responsible then."

I think they're serious Chaz.

Ah, my local crag, man!

I'd imagine that if it closes, you'd still be able to park on the road, outside the gate and walk in, no?

"How could CLOSING these parks (and the multitudes of others on that list) help anything?"

It won't. That's why it isn't going to happen.

This is just a bluff. It's the standard threat they always make. Schwartznegger already threatened to let Santa Barbara burn last month, and before that he said we would have to empty the prisons. It works like a cycle.

He wants you to believe 100% of State spending goes to fire, prisons and parks.

I think they're serious.

Remember when the Monuments were closed? No access to Jtree.

On the other extreme, rumor had it that if/when they close some of our State Parks here on the Central coast, there would be access, but no regulation. That would be open season for all horses, mountain bikes, atvs, etc. anywhere, anytime.

From what I've read, that's my understanding. But it could vary from park to park and things seem very much in flux.

Me thinks that they just arn't going to man the stations with rangers and provide the ammenities like the restrooms (lock them up). We'll see what happens.

No rangers, no water, no bathrooms, no etc! Man I like the sound of this already. I do expect it also means no parking so some sites might be hard to access but not all (CRSP has a county park across the street so parking would still exist).

Would a welfare state mean fewer people in the parks?

Scare tactic. They are pitching a fit because their crummy ballot proposals got crushed. This another prong of the lay off teachers and firefighters and set free violent criminals fear mongering we hear when the public employee unions want more money.

This is funny.

The reality is that the cuts have to be made somewhere. They just can't all be magically made out of sight, out of mind. The lack of revenue is going to mean that real cuts, often ugly, are going to have to be made. If not parks, or if not at this scale, then somewhere that people aren't going to like.

There is only so much discretionary spending--it has to come from somewhere. It's a new reality that we are all going to have to face.

The State Parks are a tiny sliver of the State budget. A very tiny sliver.

But the parks are a high-visibility operation.

*Closing the parks* only works a bluff. That's how I know they're blowing smoke. Follow the money.

We can save much more cash if we could find a way to get by with the Nation's SECOND highest paid prison guards and school teachers (instead of the highest paid ones we have now) than we could by closing all the parks.

They're bluffing. Don't buy into their bullsh#t.

Let's hope so, Chaz.

But there are a lot of tiny slivers that cumulatively add up.

The state could shut down entire agencies and most people that actually pay taxes would not even notice.

Besides, the State Parks bring in money.

They want eight bucks (I think, we always park outside the gate, by the broken glass, and walk in for nothing) to get into the festering shithole Perris Lake. And on weekends the line to get in goes for a mile.

Remember to "Favor Usar Banos", which is Spanish for "Don't let your Anchor-Babies sh#t in the lake".

Actually, the ones they are proposing to close are the ones that don't make money.

I would be pretty surprised if they close the parks and still let people in...unregulated wilderness seems very uncharacteristic of a financially distraught government. Potential lawsuits with no money being made back won't make sense to them...here's hoping for the best though-- I am looking at moving out that way and it would suck to have so much good stuff closed or unavailable.

The benefit from parks is that they create tax revenue in the surrounding communities. People buy gas, marsh mellows, hamburgers, firearms, fishing lures and the like.

The geniuses that brought this mess upon us will make it worse by stifling economic activity.
