Heat waves, or the waves you see in a solution when you pour a solute into a solvent.
Caused by optical refraction difference in two mediums.
My favorite example is at a climbing/swimming hole on the Buffalo river. In the summer the water in the pool warms up. There is a spring about 12' deep that feeds the pool cold water. If you dive down there with a mask, you can see schlieren where the cold water intrudes on the warm water.

I guess I saw a schlieren the other day as I poured cool water into the hot sugar water solution I make for the humming birds.
I could see the waves more as ribbons.
How's that pronounced? SHLEE-AIR-EN ?

These folks don't need NEW words....they need to learn the usage(& spelling)of the ones they think are already in the quiver.
