Heat waves, or the waves you see in a solution when you pour a solute into a solvent.
Caused by optical refraction difference in two mediums.
My favorite example is at a climbing/swimming hole on the Buffalo river. In the summer the water in the pool warms up. There is a spring about 12' deep that feeds the pool cold water. If you dive down there with a mask, you can see schlieren where the cold water intrudes on the warm water.

I guess I saw a schlieren the other day as I poured cool water into the hot sugar water solution I make for the humming birds.
I could see the waves more as ribbons.
How's that pronounced? SHLEE-AIR-EN ?

Could we reverse the process and someone tell me what is the word for those criss-crossy streaks of reflected light I first remember seeing in a half-full can of paint? Also seen on the hull of the yacht below.
The effect seems related to schlieren but I am sure has a word all its own.
Closest my memory produces is crostics but that word has a different territory all its own.

no no no,
one example use of my suggestion, ideation is "suicide ideation" which is probably were the work comes from, 1818...
but IBM's infamous series of adds uses it because it is an "I" word:
Ideation
Innovation
Implementation
but then again, after being forced to play buzz word bingo too long will lead to ideation of the type the word was coined to describe...

back in my 'ute i bankrupted my fool self by going to the university of stupidly expense. same one out last predisdent went to (the only good thing about him is that he proved my point to the world -- that there are as many morons per square foot at that fancy pants college as anywhere else). but His dad was a rich guy. my dad framed houses and had 7 kids. so who's the bigger moron.
i studied words (english lit). even did some grad school work there and at other insanely expensive swankeries. i like robin williams' term 'gradual school' -- the place where you gradually learn you no longer want to go to school.
but i digress [one of the great skills i learned in various insanely expensive and famous universities].
so, anyway, i tell those few fool enough to ask that what i gained from years in libraries and bankrupting my fool self was learning 3 outstanding words i hadn't encountered previously.
and here's my fave of the 3:
callipygian (cal·li·pyg·ian) adjective
from the Greek kallipygos. kalli- (beautiful) and pygē (buttocks)
definition: having shapely buttocks
(this from the merriam-webster dictionary. the OED def is better, but i don't travell with an OED (would if i could).
now here is a truly useful word. for if you are at a party and go up to a potential prom date and say "hey, you have a great butt" you will likely be slapped. and perhaps deservedly so.
OTOH, if you walk up to the same hottie and say "i was struck by what a callipygian lady/gentleman (whatever is appropriate to your gender and tastes) you are" you don't get slapped. in my esperience, you get at "well, thank you" for few know the word.
later, when they look it up they might well want to slap you, but you are at a safe distance. and given the theory of large numbers, every so often you might get a call from said prom date. touchdown.
ok, that will be $285 dollars (what i calculated every one class meeting at the university of expensive cost -- and that was back in the mid 80's).

Locofoco: noun; pronunciation; lo-kuh-fo-koh:
From Wiki:
The term "Locofoco" comes from Spanish for matches, or "loco focos" ("crazy lights"), a new invention. It originated when a group of New York Jacksonians used these matches to light candles to continue a political meeting after a conservative group tried to break up the meeting by turning off the gaslights.
In the 1840 election, the term "Locofoco" was applied to the entire Democratic Party by its Whig opponents, both because Democratic President Martin Van Buren had incorporated many Locofoco ideas into his economic policy, and because Whigs considered the term to be derogatory.
In general, Locofocos supported Andrew Jackson and Van Buren, and were for free trade, greater circulation of specie, legal protections for labor unions and against paper money, financial speculation, and state banks.

Plants, algae, and lichen not only secrete acids but are responsible for increasing the amount of carbonic acid entering the groundwater system. Blue-green algae can produce a surface karst characterized pitting and a sharp-edged spongy lattice of ridges and pinnacles. This epilithic plant-generated karst is called phytokarst.

let's go for a wine-hike out kwagunt-way, out on the land after a day of sunburning and easy water, deepening canyon and lessening petrosocial attachment.
let's go for a wine-hike on the imaginary lotto-win, let's go for a wine-hike for today.
wine-hike is the word of the day.

After perusing the entries, I have made the (regrettable) floccinaucinihilipilification that this is a useless thread for the most part.

Many have floccinaucinihilipilificated the GOP presidential candidate list to be as well.
Turn this thread into another politard debate and you have a true floccinaucinihilipilification.

flag-sucker is my WoD
as in:
Coming of age in a fascist police state will not be a barrel of fun for anybody, much less for people like me, who are not inclined to suffer Nazis gladly and feel only contempt for the cowardly flag-suckers who would gladly give up their outdated freedom to live for the mess of pottage they have been conned into believing will be freedom from fear. -HST

Antiestablishmentarianism (or anti-establishmentarianism) is a political philosophy that views a nation's or society's power structure as corrupt, repressive, exploitative, or unjust.

I feel it is my duty to take umbrage at those who would oppose reestablishing the day to day use of the word antidisestablishmentarianism. Were this word still in common use and there were a group of people who would make a move to disestablish the daily use of antidisestablishmentarianistism I would take an antidisestablishmentarianistic stance towards such a move. Damn, I'm feeling irascible today.

Wrapping my mind around Heidegger's neologisms? Understanding those might not be helpful with understanding what 'torusanewone' means and I can find no reference to it. I think I'm way out of my league here.

Antipodes. At the exact other side of the earth (or the direct opposite). NZ is pretty much the antipodes of England and in fact, the Antipodes Islands of NZ are so named.
