I was looking through my pics and came across this one, which got me to pondering how many formations there are that are called Castle Rocks (CR). I know in the Bay Area on Skyline Blvd. there is a CR, and on the N side of I-80 across the hwy from Boreal there is a CR.
Well this one is in the Brooks Range, on the East Side of the Dalton Hwy across from pump station 4 of the trans-Alaska pipeline. One of my absolute best work gigs was a week spent at PS-4. It was early June, the station engineer had brought his canoe so we spent a few evenings floating the Atigun river. And when the helicopter pilot was flying surveillance of the pipeline he offered a couple of us a ride (and for some reason I didn't take a camera with me)
Then one evening after work I hiked out from the station, and up to the base of this CR

Castle Rock, near Leavenworth. And there are some Castle Rocks in the U.K., I think. Plus probably "Castle Rocks" (translated) in other parts of Europe. As castles were often built on rocks, and there are striking similarities between the two, no big surprise.

A few years back a friend and I were wandering lost throughout the spires of Sedona. I cannot remember what route we were looking for, but it was not looking so good. We came across The Doctor and we talked for a bit. We told him what we were looking for, and he pointed out yonder to indicate our destination, and said he was getting a new guide book together: as the Toula books were getting outdated. He pointed out a line called "Ambulance Ride", and stated it was "really good!". After Bloom left, we had the debate and decide to give it a go. It turned out to be a fun line of moderate difficulty, and we were glad to throw down even though the name was intimidating. A few months later I picked up "Castles in the Sand" @ Aspen Sports. I do not know how many Castle Rock's there are, but there are many Castles in the Sand in Sedona.
Sorry for the thread drift, but this topic brought up this fine memory.

City of Castle Rock & the rock overlooking it south of Denver. . . I've also heard Castleton Tower referred to as
Castle Rock by the natives years ago.

There's a Castle Rock in the Turtle Mtns in the middle of nowhere in the CA desert.
The "rock" is a 200' high pile of mud, overhanging at least a little bit on all sides. Supposedly there's a 5.7 route up this nasty looking chimney on the back side. We hiked in, looked at it, and decided that bailing looked like a lot more fun than climbing up it (think Pinnacles and Maple Canyon, but more mud and bigger rocks). I'd want a bolt kit for the summit anchor before heading up there since I have no idea what you rap off of...I'm imagining 50 year old pitons jammed in cracks in the mud. Anyone done that one?

Hi,
In the Port Hills above Christchurch, New Zealand. One of the original crags in the region; the first guidebook was 1968. Climbs up to about grade 24 (translate that!). Sorry no picture.

don't forget Castle Rocks, Idaho. Great place to climb, Mountain bike, and get lost on you way back to Utah and end up in Nevada.

I'm still looking for the Castle in Castle Rocks, ID. As it is part of City of Rocks, it all just blends together. Super climbing, though its still kinda snowy yet.
