I have always liked the old guide tennis even though they were less that durable. I appreciated that they were pretty soft and flexible and was bummed at the newest version with the plastic heel cup and clunkier feel. I just noticed that there is now a "new" version on the Five Ten website that looks a lot like the old version. Maybe now I can stop looking on Ebay for the old ones. Fingers crossed.

I have a pair of the NEW ones... after you get adjusted to the stiffer feel... they work just as well.

And I think that they give a bit more support when lugging the pack on trails.

Come on Bat ..... get with the times.

Heel pockets wear prematurely on all my old 5.tennies. Stopped buying them for that reason and that they fairly thin under foot. Good for short approaches on rock, but not so great for anything in the 1-2 mile approach distance for my feet.

Boulder X is what I'm on now. Just need to be sure to lace them properly to keep the heel locked in the heel pocket so that you don't roll an ankle.

Loose laces sink ships.

At first, I didn't like the new guide tennies at all. I almost returned them, but then I decided to give them a try. To my surprise, I got used to them after a trip or two. The shoes got softer and fit better over time. It is helpful to have the shoe laces tight enough so that the heel does not lift when walking.

Recently, I tried my well worn old guide tennies for comparison. I definitely like the new ones much more. With the stiffer soles, my feet do not get sore after long hikes on rough terrain. They are also very good for climbing a heel-to-toe cracks.

Anyone know of an affordable approach shoe? Why are they so darn expensive?

I don't feel sneakers are an example of a good shoe. A good shoe is handmade with fine all leather construction that's hand stiched

An approach shoe is mass produced with cheap foreign labor

They should be far cheaper

Just got a pair of those Tennie GTX booties - will see how they fare on El Cap granite.
Pete has run through 2-3 pairs of Guide Tennies. Like delaminating 2 weeks out of the box. At least they stand by their product and replace them. Probably OK for walking around/scrambling but they don't seem to hold up on El Cap routes.

I normally wear the La Sportiva Boulder X's. I had to have my first pair replaced under warranty due to a big gouge in toe box area.

Not sure what's up, but I'm lucky if I get 12 months out of any brand of approach shoe. I guess I'm pretty lame by that Duck guys standards. Cheers

I bought the high top version thinking they would provide more support for the ankles. They do. Problem is they can take up too much room in a multi-pitch day pack. I sort of solve that problem by packing food and water inside both.
They are surprising light for their size, with ultra thin laces to save on a little weight, etc. I wear a size 13 street shoe but size 12 tennie fit just fine. Something to remember when trying them out before purchase.

The 5.10 outlet store in Redlands,Ca. ( on the way to Tahquitz and JT) have a little try-out climbing wall to try out their shoes.

Anywho.

2010 La Sportiva Gandas on top of a desert tower in 2017. 5th sole, over 30 ascents of Ancient art, 5.12 Offwidth, 5.10 face, other shenanigans too numerous to even keep track of!
Currently being resoled again for further adventures.
Try That with a five ten product.

Like Jaybros's Ghandas, these Sportiva Xplorers climb amazing plus have a nice braking heel, are light and discontinued- WTF!

Been hearing good things about Sportiva's new line of approach shoes. TX2/3/4

My buddy loves his TX2s for flatiron runs and just did a long ridge traverse in RMNP in them with no complaints.

The toe box is too wide on those- just like the Tennie.

I got my guide 10s for $30, so no complaints on the cost. That said, I'm babying my current pair as I haven't found a 2nd pair at that price.

They are lasting ok, despite being soft and floppy.

The uppers are wearing out along the outer edge...just like my crack shoes.

I need a cobbler to put in some reinforcement on the upper for pinkie toe down foot jams. Any suggestions?

:D

...further word. Day 2 of a trek outside of Leh, India. Good thing I had an old pair of running shoes as a backup.
