I'm leaving for Zihuatanejo on friday. I hope I don't get caught up in the unrest or any riots in Mexico. The Peso is falling and the gas prices are rising. I will not be talking any politics for sure, I think I'll just say I am from Canada...Wish me luck

Frank, Happy New Year and I hope you have an enjoyable and peaceful time. DMT, you are so right about the insularity and perhaps indifference of many who have while there are so many who have not.
Nonetheless, I hope you have a great time and enjoy the warmth after our chilly days around here.
Best!

I rather doubt that somebody who is ripe to jack you will be a connoisseur of accents,
let alone prone to being inclined to dispense mercy based on such. Buena suerte.

I'm guessing it's location-dependent. An old partner of mine lives in Huatulco to the south and hasn't mentioned any problems.

Mexico is much safer than the US. Like anywhere; if you are an idiot you can find trouble. If you pay attention, don't flash cash, and avoid any sketchy looking situations you will have no problems.People who get in trouble in Mexico are usually either messing with the narco's drugs, their girlfriends, or are drunk and waving cash around.
I've lived in Mexico for years now and have never had any problems. Touristy places are generally really safe, just be smart. The gas "crisis" is just hoarding of supplies to make more profit. It can be an issue in the cities but I have had no problem and have seen little or no increase in price in Jalisco

Mexico is much safer than the US No sh#t, Sherlock
Once my friends and I accidentally left about $3,000 worth of scuba gear on the side of the road in Quintana Roo after we re-packed our pickup truck. That evening we discovered our mistake and went back to look for our stuff.
An old Mexican man walked up to us while we were looking around - he said that our stuff sat there on the side of the road all day, and finally he took the gear over to his house for safe keeping. He refused a $100 cash reward, so we had to force him to take our money.
If we had left our gear on the side of the road in the USA, it would have been GONE in 5 seconds flat.

Mexico is much safer than the US. I love Mexico and Mexican culture but you are deluded.
In my opinion not enough attention is given to the cause of much of Mexico's misery - the river of poison that flows from the U.S., i.e. all the money coming from the low-life American dopers that buy that sh#t.

Have been going to Mexico for over 30 years and never had any trouble or felt threatened by the local people. A forum in Zihua.is saying they are having taxis strikes which got me to thinking. What better way to get the goverments attention than to disrupt the tourist trade? Hit them where it will get the most news. I hope not as it is a long walk home to Montana.

not sure that I agree 100% with this, but
Like anywhere; if you are an idiot you can find trouble
I agree. Years ago a friend and I were in Mexico to participate in the Rosarito to Ensenada bicycling ride. We drove down on a friday night, and were sleeping on the beach in Rosarito. Sometime during the night, someone was singing very loudly. Turns out it was some drunk locals. My friend was kind of pissed, and told them to shutup. They didn't like that much. I told my friend to shutup. The last thing we needed was to be in a fight, or jail in Mexico.

One big difference between the US and Mexico is that here, if you have a
problem, you can usually count on the police to help you. Not so much in
Mexico. I've known a number of people who have been shaken down by cops.
I know this will bring out the US cop haters but statistically speaking
I'll stand by my assertion.

All you need to do to confirm my statement it to examine violent crime statistics in the US and Mexico. Violent crime in the US is often random like in schools or movie theaters, with lots of collateral damage. In Mexico, violent crime is mostly cartel vs cartel. That is not to say there is no violent crime, there are bad people everywhere.
I met last weekend with the Commandante of the Michoacan Milita. According to him violence in Michoacan, one of the most dangerous drug violence states, is way down after they took out many of the narco soldiers. They still do business, but they are much more discrete.
There is no question that Us demand for drugs like meth is partly responsible for cartel violence in Mexico, but Asia is also a big player, with high demand for meth shipped from Pacific seaports
