Demand for Meth or any drug isn't the issue. There will always be a demand and therefore a supply.

The problem is the absurd "war" on that supply waged by our governments on both sides. It's the dumbest and most wasteful effort ever...

I totally agree that the war on drugs is what perpetuates the violence. Legalize drugs and the problem goes away

I think I'll just say I am from Canada...Wish me luck

After 8 years, Americans are back to saying they are from Canada...wow - that was quick. I guess I will start seeing my flag on a lot more back packs again...

I want my mom (70 yrs old) and her friend (70 too) to get a break from a cold Minnesota winter in February. any ideas where two 70-year-old women can have a hassle-free enjoyable time south of the border? goes without saying I don't want either to be decapitated.

You could suggest the Virgin Islands or Aruba if you care about them.

ms55401:

huatulco.

low key series of beaches/bays that still has all of the typically touristic desired amenity due to what was originally a govt funded push to turn the place into a tourist destination... fortunately that wasn't entirely successful so it has more of a small town feel than the big resort feel that i'm sure the mexico city bureaucrats were hoping for.

can't recommend highly enough... [with the one caveat being it's already been ten years since i was there]

WRONG!

Remember friends, Bluering thinks they only need a Duterte in Mexico to assassinate all the gangbangers. Problem solved!

Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, both great places with no real issues

Yer unaware of the running gun battle that happened on the main beach in Puerto Vallarta last year? It was a war zone! Every tourist's dream!

Cabo? It's just San Diego with a few more Mexicans.

Just returned from six days in the area south of Puerto Vallarta (third year going there). This included a day trip to Tuito. No issues, but for the first time, there is an army presence (road stops/inspections). Good or bad? Who knows.

We're headed to Huatulco Thursday morning with shoes and chalkbags. Can't yet find anything on whether it'd be worth bringing a rope and rack...
Either way, it's gonna be a good time :)

don't recall seeing anything established or easily top ropeable... but a lot can happen in ten years... do recall informal bouldering on one of the beaches furthest to the east. have fun... am jealous. :)

While I don't disagree that narco traffic + US demand causes huge problems in Mexico (and Central and South America) I gotta say that Mexico's history is awash in blood. From Aztecs pulling people's hearts out, to the invasion of the Spanish through to the shooting of hundreds of students (in Tlatelolco) before the 1968 olympics--Mexico has always had an edge.

That being said, it's a beautiful county with beautiful people--just don't be an arrogant gringo and all should be well.
