Dear Friends at Supertopo,

This family of climbers,
some of whom I don't know; but many of whom I do,
Steve & I have known each other since the 70's. Bouldering, Soloing, Sharing a house. As little as one month ago, we enjoyed hours of animated conversation at the Cheeseboard.

Thursday night, 2 days after his birthday,
Steve suffered a major stroke.
This super charming, amazingly talented, sunny, determined man can't talk, or write.
YET !
Many weeks and months of rehabilitation to come.

Having a place to rent in the Bay Area (near Berkeley)- when he gets out - is highest on the list. I know he had planned to start looking – in Scuffy time.

So,
your assistance with ideas and suggestions is earnestly sought.
and your good thoughts
and your prayers.

Background

The circumstances surrounding it are somewhat cloudy.
He was found alone, wandering around the Santa Cruz Wrecking Co. who called an ambulance that took him to Santa Clara Valley Hospital in San Jose.
Where he is now
and will be staying
for an indeterminate, but not minor, amount of time.

No one knew.
(I got a call from a social worker who somehow found my number.)
When I went into the calm so quiet room, his face lit up like a candle.
So I went and helped connect him with his family - but you are his family too.
All your responses on ST, not just the threads of birthday wishes - speak to how charmed we all are.
A true companion on this astounding agonizing beautiful trip called being a climber.

Next week should be good for visitors.
I'll post more when I know more.

He can't dredge up so many words yet
but is Fully Cognisant of all that is said
and throws in a few words and nods yes or no vigorously.
And mentally jousting with you all will be all to the good.

Thank you.

Oh this is terrible to hear. Thank you Amy Jo for letting us know. I want to come visit when he can have visitors. Please keep us updated. Will be keeping an ear open for Berkeley housing. Id offer my house but there are a ton of stairs.

Is he down in SantaCruz now?

DAMN!

There is an apartment in my building, here in the Mission, but current market rate is akin to a toenail rotation.

I'll keep an ear to the ground. Please, Amy, let me/us know if there's anything that would help out.

Oh man! Jaybro and I were just talking him at Vedauwoo -- just saying how incredible he looked for being significantly older than us. We'll be thinking about you, Steve.

Best wishes and healing vibes. Thanks for letting us know. While some of us don't get to see him (and others) as much as we'd like, we still think of you and care.

At the top for all your prayers
We mostly live our lives apart from the ones, who matter, bring us wisdom by their actions,
By the way they share, as they walk through life.
