Indian Creek is threatened again by a new recreational ATV trail proposal. Please tell the BLM not to build/allow this. Comment period is just one week, apparently (Dec 18).

link to the dauntingly long BLM document describing the latest version. No maps included, sadly:

I am writing to express my strong Support for the BLM plan to develop an environmentally responsible trail in the Indian Creek area.
Off road families are very responsible about their land use areas and treat them with the respect they deserve. We teach our children these same ethics by leading through example.
Thank you for helping to share our resources without letting elitist groups dictate who may enjoy these public lands.

Pud, if it was an existing trail I would say keep it open, but it's a new trail and parking lot just to connect two existing trails.

Kind of like squeezing a sport route between two existing routes. Southeast Utah has lost a lot of wilderness over the years, It doesn't seem necessary to add another trail in a wilderness area when there are hundreds of miles already open for offroaders.

Selfish jackasses (hi Pud!), can't seem to understand that:

A. There is NO shortage of places to go rape the desert on your penis compensators in, or around, SE Utar.

B. Other user groups roundly HATE the ATV group, not because of land destruction, trash, etc (althought they DO have a horrible reputation in that area), but because their mere presence is an intrusion on every other user group there. Nobody wants to hear your f*#king "waaaghhhhh, vroooom, WAHHAAAAAHAAAAAATATATATATAT. VRRROOOOM" while trying to enjoy an outdoor experience.

Source: Me, a kid who grew up racing MX and says there is a time and a place. Indian Creek canyon is not that place.

Next thing you all will be whining to rid the area of any domestic ranching etc.

I would be on board with that.

Well, pud, I think the off road community is improving and is far more responsible than it was a decade or so ago. Just as Harley riders are not the outlaws of long ago, either.

The side-by-side machines are helping, wildly popular, safer, appealing to families and couples who are happy to stay on designated roads, and they are pushing a more responsible ethic for the entire community.

But Indian Creek? Do we really need more roads and traffic and more people in the creek?

It would be good to see a map of the proposed new trial/road, see exactly what is being proposed. The BLM document has a gazillion pages but no map. Anyone else have one?

Next thing you all will be whining to rid the area of any domestic ranching etc. Them cattle do far more damage to the surrounding environment than any ATVers ever could.

I'll third that! End government subsidyzed ranching on public lands. No more cow welfare! It'll bring down medical costs as well!

And message sent, btw.

I'd like to see this too. That would help me make a decision on this. It might not be that big of a deal. Maybe it would be a good thing, maybe it would be a bad thing. Who knows without a map.

Come again? I can see how you might have this perspective as the highest use and highest damage areas aren't used much by climbers and mountain bikers. However, Kane Creek, for example, just in the last 3-5 years, has been transformed from a tracked-out sh#t-hole into a scorched earth motorhead hell. There is absolutely nothing left in that canyon but loose sand and cow sh#t. Hamburger, Gemini, not far behind.

The side-by-side surge doesn't help, nor are they safer - they are in fact the most dangerous, #1 in accidents per vehicle in use. Any savings in damage is really due only to the fact that among all other OHV's, they are the least capable and driven by the fattest and dumbest.

All that said, I like OHV's and feel they have a place in the mess out there - just not in the Creek. Fortunately - the Creek is mostly flat, sandy and boring and way too far from greasy restaurants - it will never be popular, IMO. The 2 parking lots in those proposals are a little scary - but then what about the numerous ones they built for climbers - can we get those removed as a fair trade?
