Either saw or chainsaw.
Two or three oak trees that were right next to the rock.
Debris of the trees was thrown over, blocking the old new dimensions approach trail

Any evidence of hand line as a fall back position from the fire?

If not, not liking.

mungeclimber-- you could very well be right. It was probably related to the fire-fighting effort

Hi Matt, I think possibly saw you on saturday morning. Our guess was the branches are there to promote climbers to use a different trail, but it just messed with us and made us knock more loose crap down the hill. It was weird though.

don't worry donini, the crux is still doing the boulder field and avoiding the poison oak...

thanks for going up there and taking pictures, werner. This is exactly what I was taking about. You can see how you now have to cut through the trees on the left to get to New Dimensions, as the debris of the trees covers the old trail.

I still have no idea who did it, and why....

There are 2 main trails up to the Arch Rock climbing area base.

This madman went up and down both of them and chainsawed small trees, branches and other vegetation on both those approaches also.

At the base of Arch Rock, the only the area in the photos have been chain sawed, nowhere else.

Why was this insanity done?

The only speculation I can come up with is some lunatic thought it would facilitate unobstructed top roping and view of Leanie Meanie and Gripper/Gripped.

This is one of the most bizarre things done I've seen in a high used area here.

werner-- are you sure it wasn't a fire crew trying to create some sort of fire perimeter or something?

Has anyone checked with the NPS restoration crews? The NPS might have decided to remove those trails. It is highly unlikely anyone would "get away" with this, when the entrance gate is so close, along with the arch rock housing which has trail crew living there

Is it really possible to run a chainsaw there without attracting any attention?

The trails aren't actually removed. There are tree debris blocking one or two of them, but it's possible to get around and not too hard. It looked to me like someone was trying to comfortize the crag. Maybe make it less shady at the base. Who knows?

A fire perimeter only at the base of the Midterm/Gripper?

What would that even accomplish?

I asked the entrance station crew if they ever heard chain saw noise in the last few weeks and nobody heard a thing they said.

Insanity .....
