By "removed" I mean pile branches and stones over the trail. This is usually the method for delineation of trails by the NPS (though this would be extremely sloppy/destructive for them)

WTF? What reason could there be, fire-fighting or other, for cutting down those trees?

Mo, Mo, Mo . . . I'm laughing at your post, but somewhat ashamed of myself for doing so.

In truth, this is about the most bizarre Valley happening I've heard of in a very long time.

Meh - some retrobolts and couple hundred Permadraws would complete the job, but the kids these days don't want to climb slabs. I've seen much worse.

I'll have to check the area out, those climbs mean a lot to me. I did the FA of Leanie Meanie and Midterm was my first 5.10 free solo.

As far as I could tell, it did not look like someone was trying to establish a new route. There is a blank, dirty wall directly above where the trees where. No evidence of scrubbing/bolts/etc...

A fire perimeter only at the base of the Midterm/Gripper?
What would that even accomplish?
If the Dog Rock fire (October 7) kept spreading north along the uphill side of 140,
I believe this is the first area where there is a big natural firebreak.
(From the talus slope below Arch Rock to the top of Arch Rock).
So removing the trees might prevent it from spreading to the other side
of this break.
They would still have to stop it in the trees down at the Arch Rock
Entrance Station, but that is close to the road and close to water,
so that would be easier to do.

I don't know how close the fire got to Arch Rock,
so it might have been premature to take out those trees.

^ most likely. Let's not be too paranoid about sport climbing, now. Plus, only the government would have the stealth chainsaws to pull this off.

Not true at all Clint.

Fire crew would never hike up to the base of Midterm/Gripper and only cut down some trees leaning against the wall right there
with no work anywhere else that would make sense if it was for firebreak prevention.

Then stack them in such a way to INCREASE the potential for a fire to take off and spread.

This is the work of a lunatic up there .....

Could be both - a lunatic fire crew person?

Or maybe a plain lunatic is more likely.

Maybe the work of people filming or photographing those climbs, trying to stage it in an ideal fashion. Reminds me of the weird pruning on the El Cap main trail.

I did see this weird cut work Sunday Oct12, immediately after Dog Rock fire was contained. 140 was just open two days by the time.
It looks like bunch of morons full of energy did this work trying to be helpful for containing fire but not really knowing what they did..
I asked at the same day park entrance lady who did this and she say - NP firefighters ...

It definitely related to Dog Rock fire, but I still doubt that this is firefighters- looks more like work of some volunteers or some stupid YNP workers

Thanks for the added info.

Fortunately the trees will grow back, although it will take some time.
But they might get trimmed again the next time a fire starts in the area...?

My partner and I climbed here shortly after the Dog Rock fire, asked about this at the Arch Rock entrance, and were told that it was the work of NPS firefighters. Did not make sense the way the trees at the base were hacked. There were some signs of a few branches being cut on the way up, but did not look like they had created a fire break or trail. The line was not deep enough to prevent the fire from jumping; the roughly hacked trail led to the base of ... well, Gripper and Midterm. As far as we could tell, the Dog Rock fire was still some ways away. Difficult, however, to second guess in light of the terrible events that week.

After grokking Clint's assessment last night it makes a lot of sense.

The fire was about 1500 yards away and that talus field would make a natural fire break with minimal damage to the terrain.

I originally visualized such a theory but at that time it made no sense to me why the trees at the very base of the wall would be cut.

Good job Clint, you've always been one of the sharpest people around.

And yes the trees probably will grow back after some time?

That's life ......
