Adult male maybe early 30s decided to free solo up almost the full height of the central area at PGSF today and decked. It made a nasty sound when he landed. He was carted out on a backboard but was conscious with no limbs sticking out at weird angles. I didn't see the fall but everyone heard the landing.

Anyone have any details? Was the guy of sound mind and what is the damage?

Wow . I usually can't sneeze without someone checking my knot or belay technique at PG Sunnyvale , I'm surprised someone didn't see him and try to talk him down ....

It seemed like he fell at least 30 ft based on where witnesses said he fell from. My intuition is that he was a novice and had no idea what he was doing. If he has no serious injury he is going to be sore as hell for a few days.

I wonder how long it will take for PG to get a letter from his attorney.

Right, because responsible climbing gyms should have climbers on a leash and collar with their own personal safety attendant.

That's because it's called Mechanism of Injury. Standard EMS protocol. Since BLS/ALS personal don't have pocket CT/MRI scanners handy, they always take the side of caution. They did the right thing.

Novice what? Novice human?

Had he never experienced gravity before?

Good thing the floor is as soft as the grades.

glad I wasn't there today...

the floors are nice but I wouldn't want to fall from 30' onto them...

and I agree that the grades are soft, softer than the floors, I topped out at 5.11a yesterday and finally fell off a 5.11b (that would be a full number grade difference with the out of doors, unless not climbing for 3 months made me better).

If you fall from more than a body length or have a head/neck injury you're going to get backboarded and collared. Hope the guy lives to learn from his mistake.

They're not consistant enough to be soft.

Do they allow free soloing in the gym?

Anyways .... bottom line

Sh!t happens whether indoors or outdoors.

Best wishes to the poor guy who fell ......
