Adult male maybe early 30s decided to free solo up almost the full height of the central area at PGSF today and decked. It made a nasty sound when he landed. He was carted out on a backboard but was conscious with no limbs sticking out at weird angles. I didn't see the fall but everyone heard the landing.

Anyone have any details? Was the guy of sound mind and what is the damage?

Wow . I usually can't sneeze without someone checking my knot or belay technique at PG Sunnyvale , I'm surprised someone didn't see him and try to talk him down ....

It seemed like he fell at least 30 ft based on where witnesses said he fell from. My intuition is that he was a novice and had no idea what he was doing. If he has no serious injury he is going to be sore as hell for a few days.

I wonder how long it will take for PG to get a letter from his attorney.

Right, because responsible climbing gyms should have climbers on a leash and collar with their own personal safety attendant.

That's because it's called Mechanism of Injury. Standard EMS protocol. Since BLS/ALS personal don't have pocket CT/MRI scanners handy, they always take the side of caution. They did the right thing.

Good thing the floor is as soft as the grades.

glad I wasn't there today...

the floors are nice but I wouldn't want to fall from 30' onto them...

and I agree that the grades are soft, softer than the floors, I topped out at 5.11a yesterday and finally fell off a 5.11b (that would be a full number grade difference with the out of doors, unless not climbing for 3 months made me better).

If you fall from more than a body length or have a head/neck injury you're going to get backboarded and collared. Hope the guy lives to learn from his mistake.

Do they allow free soloing in the gym?

Anyways .... bottom line

Sh!t happens whether indoors or outdoors.

Best wishes to the poor guy who fell ......

Sh#t happens. I used to work at a gym and would solo up/down/up/down for hours. Actually pretty fun... Hope he's OK

Werner, they absolutely prohibit soloing above a certain height in the roped climbing area. I don't remember the exact rule but I think it's not getting your feet more than around 5-6 feet off the ground. Obviously you solo higher than this in the bouldering areas but in there you have lots of pads to position in addition to the soft floor.

@phylp - the gym I worked at had a color change on the wall (white to blue) which was the 'bouldering height.' you can boulder anywhere so long as it's no higher than about 10 feet.

A good rule!

i have on several occasions been 20'+ up at a gym when i realized i hadn't clipped into the auto belay. Fortunately there's always an easy route down at a gym.

They oughta sue him! Or the person standing next to him when he decked for "severe mental and emotional trauma".

I fell from 6-7 feet and broke my heel bone. This guy fell 30 feet and no broken bones???

A lot of gyms have floors that are roughly the equivalent of a bouncy castle.

Seems the likelihood of the gym suing him would be higher than the guy using (edit: suing) the gym. The gym has clear rules he violated, and in doing so endangered the other customers. Even if he didn't get hurt, there's a good chance it could impact the gym's insurance rates which is a material financial damage. But I'm a legal idiot nonlawyer, just spewing on a forum for no apparent reason, so take me with a grain of salt.

it makes you realize that NOT decking is the name of the game

Yep. part of my training program for new outdoor climbers questioning their gear placements is, "just don't fall".

Seems to work. (although I need to remember that too sometimes, it hurts. But I've been blessed with no broken parts...)

Oh gawd, that ankle. Was it a break or dislocation? It was at such a 90 degree angle I woulda thought a fracture would have been compound.
