Sorry Weege, I couldn't help the little jab, but I think you get it.

More to the spirit of your thread;

My favorite climbing partner and spiritual co-conspirator, Kim Dao recently regaled me with his impressions about doing Widow's Tears. Epic and bold. But what he really was calling me about was advice about a severe gout attack he was suffering because of his ascent. We share this affliction, probably, from suffering the same permanent damage from dehydration and compromised water sources on shared climbs.

Some experiences last beyond their intended scope.

Partnerships.

I wrote this about partnership a couple year's back, and I think it's still just as relevant today:

When it comes to the serious alpine realm, partnerships are KEY. All other factors are easily dealt with if you have the right partner.
I've climbed for half a century and have tied in with hundreds of people but when it comes to the alpine realm (no, not the Sierras) my partners have been:
John Bragg, Jay Wilson, George and Jeff Lowe, Michael Kennedy, Jack Tackle, Greg Crouch and Tom Englebach....less than the fingers of both hands.
Partnerships on less serious terrain are also important for the overall enjoyment and safety of the climb. A rope has two ends, one for each member of a partnership.....what other outdoor activity has that partnership requirement?

You can be out of touch for a long time, but there is always something there.

My first partnership was initially more of a mentorship. Having someone see something in me, and placing a road in front of me where that thing would express itself and flourish. There was a fair amount about us personality wise in our mid 20s that was not at all aligned. With only minor chaos we grew together, because of each other and an inexpressible love of the path before us. Nearly 8 years later, with the last 5 being in separate states and only occasionally climbing together- ct is still one hell of a partner.

He introduced me to Henry who has the spirit running through his veins. Henry and I have climbed some great stuff together while not always clicking in the real world. I've also somehow managed dislodge a lot more rock on to Henry than anyone else- maybe that's why!

Another early partner is Dirka- Haven't seen enough of this giggling goon lately. Dirka showed me that climbing isn't all going to war and getting the job done, but that hijinx are necessary sometimes.

Bringing things full circle, I had the great fortune of meeting toettch and taking the mentor role. Just as ct before, all I really had to do was show him the path and he was off running. Rostrum, Astroman, Crucifix, Positive Vibes, Sunspot, Tradewinds, Harding Route, Silk Road.... I'd say the last 2 years have proven a fruitful partnership!! Our friendship back in the real world is profound.

There are a handful of others, Sam, Dennis, Courtney, John, Shannon- all of them the cream of the crop.

This season I have found myself soloing much more as schedules don't align, and everyone gets busy ramping up into their mid-30s. Regardless of how it all unfolds I cherish the people that this life has linked me to.
