When I first met Werner I was about 17, living in Camp 4 off and on during the summer. I would follow him around like a little rat, never leaving his side.

Soon we were climbing all the time and Werner would lead everything. Then The Day Came.....at Cookie Cliff. When we got to the base of Outer Limits Werner told me, "You gotta lead man. Time for you to lead, Dave."

After my lead Werner said, " That was the most protection I've ever seen anybody ever put in on Outer Limits." When I got to the ground Werner said, "you're on your own now man, you're on your own path, Dave." I walked away.

Thanks Werner.

Climbing the Rostrum with Werner is one of my most cherished memories. Plus he knows every tree on the top of El Cap. He has helped many. Props to Merry.

Never met Werner in person being I was never a hard man, just a weekend nobody warrior. He's busted my chops once or twice on this forum, but it is great that he has found a way to spend decades in the valley. I can't imagine seeing some of the stuff he has dealt with.

Cheers to Werner and Merry.

How can anyone appreciate Werner when he's calling us Americans stupid...?

My son, Chase, was leading Cookie Monster one day. It was onsight and he was working hard up near the crux. Werner was over on Crack a Go Go. After mini tracking he began to descend and, from mid height, watched Chase leading. As Chase struggled at the crux he calmly spoke beta - " reach around to the right, around to the right", which Chase did to complete the pitch. It was key beta. It struck me then that Werner has always been a positive influence for me, always a welcomed presence. I've never climbed with him, but have nothing but appreciation !

NO PUSSIES HERE:

I speak for my two brothers and we all love Herr Braun. He'll never let you down.

How can you laugh? When you know you're not down.

Don't tell lies.

Werner and I spent several hours bouldering on the Camp-4 circuit. After shaking my way up some large boulder I asked how to get down...

... Werner replies "that was the descent route." I had to collect my wits!

My only time climbing with Werner was when he led me up the Meatgrinder. He puts in a couple of pieces of pro and does it effortlessly. I get to the belay with numerous leakers on my hands and Werner looks at his hands and says "oh man, not a scratch"

All is good Kenny... still skiing a lot in the Himalaya. Looks like your doing well. I like all the things your doing in the valley, its great. Have to say, I miss the place, maybe drop by next summer. will let you know... from the land of frogs, Craig

Here's a pic from last winter in the Annapurna, my turns are the bigs ones on the right. You can get a perspective of the size of my turns by looking at the guy coming down on the left, I was letting them run you might say...
