When I first met Werner I was about 17, living in Camp 4 off and on during the summer. I would follow him around like a little rat, never leaving his side.

Soon we were climbing all the time and Werner would lead everything. Then The Day Came.....at Cookie Cliff. When we got to the base of Outer Limits Werner told me, "You gotta lead man. Time for you to lead, Dave."

After my lead Werner said, " That was the most protection I've ever seen anybody ever put in on Outer Limits." When I got to the ground Werner said, "you're on your own now man, you're on your own path, Dave." I walked away.

Thanks Werner.

Never met Werner in person being I was never a hard man, just a weekend nobody warrior. He's busted my chops once or twice on this forum, but it is great that he has found a way to spend decades in the valley. I can't imagine seeing some of the stuff he has dealt with.

Cheers to Werner and Merry.

My son, Chase, was leading Cookie Monster one day. It was onsight and he was working hard up near the crux. Werner was over on Crack a Go Go. After mini tracking he began to descend and, from mid height, watched Chase leading. As Chase struggled at the crux he calmly spoke beta - " reach around to the right, around to the right", which Chase did to complete the pitch. It was key beta. It struck me then that Werner has always been a positive influence for me, always a welcomed presence. I've never climbed with him, but have nothing but appreciation !

I speak for my two brothers and we all love Herr Braun. He'll never let you down.

How can you laugh? When you know you're not down.

Werner and I spent several hours bouldering on the Camp-4 circuit. After shaking my way up some large boulder I asked how to get down...

... Werner replies "that was the descent route." I had to collect my wits!

My only time climbing with Werner was when he led me up the Meatgrinder. He puts in a couple of pieces of pro and does it effortlessly. I get to the belay with numerous leakers on my hands and Werner looks at his hands and says "oh man, not a scratch"

Good to hear from you. Hope you're still shredding.

I still never forget and always remember that wild day you me and Steve in Mammoth on that windy day screaming down the slopes. :-)

It was an all time favorite and the only thing missing that day was Bridwell.

I'm not very fond of threads like this though.

Captain Chaos, how do you do this? Just hike up there with telemarks and ski anywhere you want? No permits required? I love Nepal, to just go there and hang out, hike around trekking, whatever. There's more to Nepal than standing on line at Everest. I think a fun trip would just be "peak bagging" the smaller ones that don't need permits. Maybe some of them are ski-able. I thought Anapurna was one of the deadly ones, but on skis I guess you can just ride the avalanche.

27 year old Noob named HT in C4 for a week scrounging for partners.
I find this rather odd guy who appeared to be half deaf and he offered to climb Nutcracker with me. Gave me the alternate thin crack start for my first 5.9 lead (heck, I could hardly lead 5.8). Up we went. Smooth, fun, straight up climbing.
Thanks Werner for a great climb.

A day or two later I chatted up eKat in C4 (not knowing of course that she had a b/f) and then the 3 of us climbed Commitment. Again I got the 5.9 crux lead.
Yahoooooo!
Never heard of KBrockman again till SuperTopo.

The amazing thing to me is that he can remember them all verbatim.

Yeah, I am now in the "Ass saved by Werner Braun" club. Much thanks to the man and all he has done.

And while you may not like threads like these, you are one of the people that deserve them - partially because of that very attitude. I owe ya. The things that you and YOSAR have done are a big part of why I am in SAR today. I've always wanted that yellow shirt, but being as I can't live in the Valley I do what I can.

Appropriate thread. You're a cool guy too, Dave. Sat around a fire with ya at Facelift a couple of years ago.

Werner is just a another man doing the work put in front of him, he would tell you. He doesn't like this bullshit praise, he just does what needs to be done.

I respect him because he does more than most, and does the jobs that not many others can.

And despite that, the dude has a very generous heart. A pure heart. That's what i dig about Werner. God bless ya, Werner!

To embody the Yosemite icon of the dirtbag hardcore veteran with a mind of his own and a style no one could ever duplicate is a feat only one man could pull off.

Everybody knows him, not everyone likes his ideas, but he has the respect of each of us who know him.

Right on Crankster...you know I sometimes think that if I lived in the Valley going on a half century and spent a good portion of my time trying to wipe the smile off of Darwin's face by rescuing people who did profoundly stupid things I would be so cynical about the human race that my time on ST would have been very short.

Werner’s is sort of like the Bob Dylan of the valley and Yosemite. A living legend. Like Dylan, he is humble, happy and humorous underneath it all. Those here who have never met him, but put him down, are out of touch with the real world of climbing in Yosemite and who Werner really is. Cheers to Werner, even if he too is just another “stupid American!” Great person and flat out hero to scores of people.

From: Tim Bermingham
Delivered by: MFM, his older brother

Hi!

Tim mentioned he saw your name in the McKinney thread during his "annual phone call."

I don't think Tim's been on skis for quite a while. He golfs three times a week.

And to set the record straight, Werner doesn't golf...are you guys nuts?

One thing you should know about Werner. He can turn off his hearing aid or leave it on, as the situation demands.

And I'm pretty certain that John Dill's hearing is leaving the building, too.

Another good one from the past, like the one from Tobin's collection. Thanks again, Werner, the bodhisattva.

Maybe 6 years back my son at 16 or 17 was soloing something on the tower and was running a day behind on getting in touch after he finished. I wrote Werner via ST, as a stranger since I bet he doesn't remember me showing him some guitar licks back in the mid-70s, to ask if he'd check on John.

An hour later I got an e-mail. Werner had gone down valley, looked around and concluded the boy must be down. A little while later I heard from John after he finished the deproach with his bags and got to some connectivity.

Werner is a good man.

How did a Werner appreciation thread drift into street fighting?

Jody, I think Werner was there to go Kali on your ass, you know, only if you needed it. Werner, polite enough to stand in for others.

Jody, glad to see you resolved the conflict in yourself. Also, pre-emptive apology, if i'm being presumptuous, to possibly resolve conflict in others.
