American Alpine Club Supports
"Direct Beckey
The American Alpine Club will support the documentary film on the life of the renowned climber, Fred Beckey. Fred is making an attempt on an unclimbed peak in Asia in the spring of 2006.
Fred Beckey is foremost a climber. He is also an author, lecturer, historian and preservationist. Fred’s contributions include authoring many books on mountain geography, mountain history, climbing guidebooks and most recently his historical account "Range of Glaciers." He has presented hundreds of slide shows from Harvard to the University of Texas all with an emphasis of educating the public on the importance of preserving the alpine environment. He has climbed countless first ascents all over the world and his will and drive to continue to climb remote mountain ranges is incessant. He continues to inspire climbers and mountaineers with his passion for adventure and his love of exploration.
Fred Beckey’s life story will be told in a powerful, inspiring film which will give a unique and special opportunity to span generations and help preserve his incredible life. Through a Child’s Eyes Productions will produce a film which will act as an important historical document, and at the same time tell the raw and impassioned story of a unique human being.
Donations to the AAC for this project will be matched by one of Beckey’s most influential apprentices, Yvon Chouinard, of up to a total of $7,000 towards the end goal of $30,000. Donations of $500 and up will receive a signed copy of the completed film.
Get ready to hear the story of a lifetime!
"There is no more prolific and important American climber than Fred. This story has to be told." Yvon Chouinard

I hadn't heard of this film before and wondered if it has come out yet, since the thread originated in 2006. Went to the link (thanks, ec!!!), called up "Through A Child's Eyes Productions", and ended up talking with Dave O'Leske, who is directing, producing and editing "Direct Beckey". Dave says its a huge project and he's now in the editing phase. Last year they shot a lot of interviews with climbers who know Fred - Robbins, Chouinard, etc. They have a very large volume of content and it all sounds very exciting. I can't wait for this to come out.
They do need more funding. Dave is doing this while working other paying jobs, so donations will help. And they are tax deductible - link above. Am very glad this film is being made! Watching Fred's slides the other night I was struck by how many years he has been climbing full time. He's done so much that some of the classic routes he's done got just a mention and so many others didn't come up at all. Some of the slides (with Heinrich Harrer) were close to 60 years old. The hard part in making the film will be whittling down Fred's achievements to something that can be seen in a couple hours. The DVD will likely have hours of "extras".
edit: ihp, try this: https://www.americanalpineclub.org/donate/account and mention "Direct Beckey" in the comments field.
I'll email throughachildseyesproductions.com and ask them to update the link.

bump for Dave and his film. This is an amazing piece of work he's been committed to for years now and I anticipate it being an awesome documentary.

I was impressed by his recall of details, route specifics, names of places and people...anecdotes about the climbs. I liked the geographic organization of the presentation but was disappointed that he didn't get to the Sierras. He did so much there. I asked him if he could recall Castle Rock Spire and he remembered it well, particularly how wild and logistically complex the approach is.

Received an email update today about this film, which is scheduled for release in 2017. Am looking forward to seeing it!
Dave's email says, "Now at age 93, after a lifetime of rejecting societal norms in his single-minded quest for peaks, Beckey is ready to tell his story for the first time."

that has to be one of the greatest quotes of all time:
"some people may think it’s an adventure to go on a cruise ship to the mediterranean... and that’s great if they want to do that… to me it's no adventure at all 'less somebody bombs the ship."
f. beckey
truly, one of climbing's o.g.s
thanks kunlan...
now anybody that is a dutifully employed non-dirtbag... go pony up $30 [or more] and support the telling of one of the greatest climbing stories that america, nay the world, has had the pleasure to be witness to...

Did anyone else catch the unintended joke? The producer said, "I'm using Kickstarter to raise funds for the film. Fred didn't quite hear him, and it sounds like he said, "Piss burger?"
The trailer was fun, captures something you can't put your finger on.

Evening Beckey DIRTBAG BUMP.
Kickstarter funding is looking good. $984 now, to reach $75k.
Help support this!
I love Fred's comment about he and his brother's 2nd ascent of Mt. Waddington, in 1942:
"I don't think of any kids 17 and 19, who would take off for Mt. Waddington while they were still in high school."
They spent 6 weeks out there, and the 3rd ascent was 35 years later.
