A few more photos from my desert-dust-filled, 4-megapixel free-bee…

The Dana Plateau and the Third Pillar, as viewed from highway 120, mid-morning

Cal Trans recently “resurfaced” 120 in Lee Vining Canyon, from the bottom of the grade…

… to just below Blue Slide and Transpire Wall. Apparently it only took a total of 6 hours to complete. The section of road from below Blue Slide to the Park gate is scheduled for repaving, etc., etc. this summer.

Ridgelines and hanging valley, south side of Lee Vining Canyon

Hanging valley, and the Third Pillar peeking through in the distance

Ellery Bowl, filled with numerous ski tracks

Trivia: Add a “9” and you get the zip code for Yosemite…

Informative plaques for tourons on the history of skiing Ellery Bowl and winter ice-skating on the lake…

Ellery Lake and Ellery Bowl

Tioga Lake, Mt. Dana, and Lion’s Head

Tioga Lake, as viewed from the overlook pullout

The gate, and a “STOP” sign for the visually impaired

Tioga Pass entrance kiosk

Mice… kiosk drawer

The “administrator’s tunnel”

My contribution: digging out the Mather plaque

Winter sign

The signs on the right as you enter the Park. One of the snow banks in the first parking area on the right was 7 feet tall – the deepest snow around the pass.

The real gate

Got locks…? Which one is yours?

For the high rollers

Snow banks and Mammoth Peak

Crappy photo stitch – Mt. Dana on the left and Mammoth Peak on the right

Mt. Dana and cool cloud

Given the amount of snow this year, I expected it to have taken longer to plow the road. But NPS stepped up and got ‘er done quick and I applaud them for that! Apparently, NPS contracted Mono County to do some (all?) of the plowing this year and county workers were loading up one of the snow blowers when I drove up. Looks like NPS might think twice about plowing the road themselves next year…

Stainless rap rings???

The traction action…

Loading up the big guy to roll back down the hill

Mad Max would be proud… Paint it Black

“…but when I eat too many objects that are not composed of H2O, my tummy hurts and I get sick and spew gallons of hydraulic fluid all over the road…”

Time for repair

What sign…??? There were several other signs, just east of the gate, that were either snapped over or eaten… “Mono County calling Cal Trans…”

What’s left of the 2 blue curbs – rebar punji stakes for your tires…

Squirrel-proof, bear-proof, and sometimes touron-proof… but NOT snow blower-proof!

At least the pay phone survived…

Clouds above Tioga Pass

Ice on Ellery Lake, early afternoon

Ice on Ellery Lake, as viewed from the dam outlet

The spillway below Ellery Lake, as the day warmed up and snowmelt increased

Minor avalanche debris on the north side of Tioga Crest, Warren Canyon

Dana Plateau ridgeline and Ellery Bowl above 120 in evening light – notice the huge cornice

While there is still a ton of snow up there, it was melting really fast when the sun came out on Wednesday. It hasn’t been freezing at night at TPR over the last few days, so, provided temps continue to rise and the sun stays out, it shouldn’t be too long before all of that white stuff begins its course to your faucet.

Here’s to another season of climbing in The Meadows!

Cool- thanks for posting.

I would add that if you can't remember which lock is yours, just cut the chain and add another lock. It seems to be the thing to do.
