One pitch was beautiful alpine blue ice, the top and steeper part was becoming rotten and interesting fast.

Nice pic. I did that route in the fall many years ago--tough blue ice the whole way. My sense of the route--and this is my personal preference--is that it needed to be either a) steeper or b) just a snow climb, i.e. do it earlier in the season. There's something just a pain in the ass about 40 degree-ish hard ice. I seems to me a big hassle and not that fun. When ice gets steeper, the whole game changes, but at the lower angles, ugh.
