What if I agree,The Chief.

What if I say yeah we ffed up,we [humans] in science screwed up ,we caused CC,by not covering our asses in concerns with petro-chems,etc.

Have we [humans]not caused CC?

So you see, you should not stereotype SCIENCE any more than you should Stereotype CORPORATIONS

[quote]Lomborg gets plenty wrong in his WSJ piece, thus denying a lot of what competent climate scientists have observed.

http://scienceblogs.com/gregladen/2015/02/03/bjorn-lomborg-did-not-get-facts-straight/[/quote]

I'm sorry, monolith, but I find that blog rather ineffective in its criticism because it completely ignores both Lomborg's thrust and the underlying economics. I should add that my citation to that commentary at least had a disclaimer; I see none for this blog. His economics leaves much to be desired, and his argument is sometimes inane.

Example: [quoting Lomborg]: The dramatic decline is mostly due to economic development that helps nations withstand catastrophes. If you’re rich like Florida, a major hurricane might cause plenty of damage to expensive buildings, but it kills few people and causes a temporary dent in economic output. If a similar hurricane hits a poorer country like the Philippines or Guatemala, it kills many more and can devastate the economy."

His response:"Rich like Florida? When a hurricane hits the US coast it is far more likely to hit an area in poverty than one that is wealthy."

Really? Florida's "poor" and the poor in the Philippines or Guatemala are comparable?

To me, the blog is worse than useless, because it causes readers without his knowledge of climate science to turn off his pronouncements on climate science, since his conception of international poverty is so wrong.

That said, I can understand how he feels compelled to discredit anything Lomborg says, for the same reason that I reflexively want to discredit anything that a Naomi Klein, for example, purports to write about economics. Most of us familiar with the climate change debates are well aware that Lomborg is an outlier. I'm not sure that Laden (the author of the blog piece) has any clue that his economics are similarly outlying.

Science isn't just a thing. It's people too.

i don't trust anybody that says they know more than me.

They gotta prove it

Nobody changes their minds. You can pluck out a post from two years ago, plop it down again, and nobody would even notice.

Lol.. I might just start doing that.

I like the distinction between production science and impact science. I think, though, that it's rather oversimplified to say that conservatives dislike impact science. Rather, at least this conservative dislikes those who would impose their solutions as optimal without a proper analysis to determine optimality. I'll admit, though, that my dislike probably leads me to more disagreements with, say the Heritage Foundation than with the IPCC, so maybe the generalization has validity after all.

Yeah it's definitely oversimplified, as I noted regarding evolution and vaccines as well. But it's meant to work as a statistical generalization, i.e. self-identified conservatives on a survey are more likely to disapprove of examples of impact science, and approve examples of production science. At least according to McCright et al. 2013:
http://iopscience.iop.org/1748-9326/8/4/044029

A competing hypothesis is that conservatives tend to express less trust in science generally, favoring other ways of knowing. Again that's stated as a statistical generalization, and a topic of ongoing research.

That's exactly what science is.

The process of proving it.

They can't prove anything.

It's all beyond them ......

For the argumentativeness that might be true, but it skips over all the science content that for some of us is the interesting part of this thread. That content stays fairly up-to-date.

It's a hard subject to say what is appropriate or inappropriate... but when someone who has clearly crossed the line and has become so negative...generally taking all the forum bandwidth by posting at every second and steering every subject in their direction that obviously now one person is affecting the experience hundreds of users. So why should they have that ability to take this public thing, that can be so great, and steer it towards such negativity.
