Layton Kor is awaiting a kidney transplant. We came up with a plan to raise money for Layton's surgery and medical expenses.

I have Layton's book "Beyond The Vertical". I would love to have Layton autograph it. I could send it to him postage prepaid so L. could easily return it to me. Of course I would send a check for the autograph.

I was checking out the living kidney donor websites.
From what I could see, they need to match blood and antigen type. The best matches are typically from the family, but I imagine that a match could be found.
It is an idea. You can do fine on one kidney. Finding a match might be tough. Really, though. It seems like a small thing compared to another person's life. We had a close friend with Leukemia, and several hundred people signed up for the bone marrow list. It is a good, humane, thing.
I am going to check it out, but I think that I might be disqualified.
edit: I checked deeper in the website and see that he is needing 250 grand. For those who can afford it, a larger donation could be made.
If they could set up a 501-3C (any colorado attorneys out there?) it would make it easy for corporations to donate. Big bucks. I am not sure if it would be possible. I am not an attorney.

News to me, but WTF.
Bits and pieces of information leak out, but the whole story is daunting.
A new kidney is not exactly a magic bullet, even if it were available today.
Things are complex, but whatever help is welcome, and no doubt well intended.

Layton already has a potential donor who is a family member and a close match. As Piton Ron has pointed out however, the situation is not quite that simple. Since everything medical costs a lot of money though, including the treatments he's on now, any contributions will be put to good use for sure, and are a good idea, along with everyone's positive thoughts.

To the rest of you, Jan is as about as well dialed in on the Kor scene as anybody I know.
She is a terrific member of the "team".
Base 104 makes a good point about the 501-3C status and I believe that Fatty is already addressing this issue.
Now we all need to get on the same page.

Hasn't "the" Kor Roof on SFWC been freed?
I remember hearing the free version of SFWC described as a V7 boulder problem in the middle of relatively more moderate climbing.
It probably has been done, but a group of modern monkeys on a ledge, with a top rope on the roof might be kind of entertaining. Maybe even on video for Mr. Kor.

V10 - My bad. I'm probably not remembering the pitch correctly either. I would guess that anyone attempting V10 would have the rigging skills to allow enough slack for the unaided ascent, while preventing a bounce onto the ramp. Then again. That might be a pretty rare pad person. How did it go?
I don't know if the idea for a video (mentioned above) would start an new era of pads on walls. The horror. Still, I think that it would be worth it considering the cause. Would Mr. Kor be offended by the style?

Truly a legend. I had the honor of climbing with Layton somewhere near Glenwood Springs in 1985. Scraed the the crap out of me then. He had some un-protected 5.11 stashed away, it seemed just for me!

I will just throw my two cents in.
Some of you are really poor dirtbags. I myself was once a penniless dirtbag. You are exempt!
I bailed on the life after the usual mental torture. So I am not penniless anymore. I do constantly wonder what would have happened if I had taken the other road. The one that many of my old friends did.
So, it is a small thing to make a donation for a great climber. You can barely move around without being brushed by a breeze that Kor created so long ago.
So go without Sushi tonight, you ex or never-were dirtbaggers! Make a donation. He needs it, and a lot of us can now afford it. Werner probably has a moral story about this, but to me it is simple humanity. And for what it is worth, make a donation every month. It makes you feel good, I promise.

How fcked up is the state of the so-called health insurance system that he HAS health insurance AND medicaid AND a living donor but cannot proceed w/o $250K?
call me naive but isn't it possible for one of the bigger sponsors of the fundraiser put Layton Kor on their payroll & extend him

Backcountry.com is owned by Liberty Media which owns a shiteload of large organizations such as the Atlanta Braves, QVC, expedia & more.
Or TNF w/ annual sales of $238 million (2005 est.)
Or Mammut Sports group w/ 2005 sales volume of 150 million swiss francs (roughly same in USD)
or get him a new kidney abroad... ( I know of someone whose mom went to Germany b/c it was cheaper & faster)

Once again; this situation is complex. There is no magic bullet. It is not merely a question of money.
Layton just had a procedure that should help things along but there are dozens of hurdles yet to come on this road.
I know that all the well wishing means a great deal and will make certain to pass it on to him.

Again, I'm backing up Piton Ron.
The situation is complex. Many things need to happen medically before a kidney transplant can even be considered. Things are proceeding slowly step by step.
As for personal insurance, it's impossible to get once you have a pre-existing condition. A bigger problem is that Medicare will probably pay for a transplant but then won't come up with $700 a month for the immuno-suppressant maintenance drugs. Many people have their transplants fail when they can't pay for the drugs.
Other than a big company taking Layton on as a shadow employee (maybe in return for some slide shows?), the only long term hope is some kind of health care reform and that Layton in the meantime, will have the stamina to keep chipping away at all the obstacles. Then again, stamina and personal courage were always two of his strong points.
