I'm glad this thread was bumped. During the Dawn Wall media saga my thoughts kept coming back to the letters to the editor cartoon with the "SMITH AND COSGROVE BLOW DEAD GOATS" header, and almost no one would have got the reference over there.

Whut the fukk is that supposed to mean ? Tami, what the esteemed, if inscrutable, zBrown implied is that a good Knight
is more valuable than a bad Bishop, especially in a closed position and
especially if it involves oppositely colored bishops. Jess sayin...But YMMV.

It's just a rule in chess, you cannot return a chess piece (including knights) once you've taken it.
Rules rule the world?
His [Harold Garfinkel] point of view wasn’t that rules aren’t important, but that how they get interpreted and applied is a matter of mutual negotiation. We have to have common resources for any form of coordinated action of human beings, and we use these common resources just to exist in a shared world. It’s a fundamental part of the human condition
A study one of Garfinkel's group might have done would be to start a chess game with someone and then midway, return a captured piece to the board and observe what happens.
We could ask Mr. Garfinkel but he passed in 2011. He may have been the most articulate person on Earth whilst alive. It would have been an interesting study to observe a conversation beteen him and some of the folks on the ST forum wing.
"What did you call your mother?" I asked.
"I called her Mom," he replied in a naive tone.
"I mean what other words did you use to call your father and mother? How did you call them?" I said, trying to be patient and polite.
He scratched his head and looked at me with a stupid expression.
"Golly!" he said. "You got me there. Let me think."
After a moment's hesitation he seemed to remember something and I got ready to write.
"Well," he said, as if he were involved in serious thought, "how else did I call them? 1 called them Hey, hey, Dad! Hey, hey, Mom!"
I laughed against my desire. His expression was truly comical and at that moment I did not know whether he was a preposterous old man pulling my leg or whether he was really a simpleton. Using all the patience I had, I explained to him that these were very serious questions and that it was very important for my work to fill out the forms. I tried to make him understand the idea of a genealogy and personal history.
"What were the names of your father and mother?" I asked.
He looked at me with clear kind eyes.
"Don't waste your time with that crap," he said softly but with unsuspected force.

Forget it. I tried to return her a long time ago, but they wouldn't take her back.
