You and I have talked about this before, Lynne. When you meet someone for the first and they have alittle too much knowledge and preconceptions that have gone eerily awry? Should you be yourself? Or their construct of who they think of you as, just to be polite?

Two things:

1) My family and clients have NO idea as to my username. I have separate family/work and Happie email accounts. I saw the need for this separation the moment I found rock climbing websites. When I finally told them I went to Joshua Tree for vacations, every time we have ever spoken since, they ask "have you been to Joshua Tree?" And not in a good way, fro a trip to Jtree means I WASN'T visiting them....

2) If you think it is just family/coworkers who lurk, think again. SO many people "know" me that on a weekend at the cliffs, a person standing nearby whom I get into conversation with is sure to mention *something* I wrote about online. And often it is not the *Big* threads, but some small obscure comment.... Sometimes when I ask what their username is they say they never post, or even don't want to divulge it.

I don't mind the climbers too much because - after all - I am aware that I put it out there. Those who don't want people making the connection do what I do with family - they simply do not tell people their username! It actually is a pretty good solution, if that's the way you want it.

It has actually gotten to the point where I have had a few people in the subway ask me about the Gunks. People I have NOT met out climbing.....

Perhaps there should be a thread calling on lurkers to come out and introduce themselves.

I am a lurker; not because I am "spying" on anyone, but rather I am a climber, I learn a lot from reading the posts here, I enjoy the trip reports, and I think the ST community is great - you all take care of each other.

I do understand about needing privacy, Lynne (I have enjoyed reading your posts, by the way!), and I, too, have learned not to post on the Internet using my real name. Someone is going to Google your name sooner or later and see everything you've ever done online, not to mention pictures if you've posted them as well.

Lurkers come on out and say hello :)

Boy you Gals and Guys are nice !!! I have indeed made some real and incredible friends on ST. Thanks for the encouragement.

Now I'm off to the beach to seek anonymity while surfing and kayaking. Peace, Lynne

And, Caylor, with God's help we will arrange a nice toast to JB in C4....Sunday 9/20 in the evening.

Just a thought, Lynne, you might want to consider creating a Facebook or Myspace page. You can keep your family up to date on what's going on with your life, post pictures, send messages, etc. and vice versa. There are privacy controls on there so only the family/friends you choose can access your page. I have a Facebook page just for this reason and my family & friends enjoy reading about my adventures (or mis-adventures more often than not...).

They may enjoy that better than following you around on here.

I am not exactly a lurker. I have posted before and
once divulged my real identity and dropped some names
of climbing partners. I guess I did the latter out of
insecurity and wanting to establish some creds. But I
seldom post because I don't have that much to say. No
need to clog the band width with trivia. Which I suppose
THIS is!

Also, even climbing outside I tend to be rather passive,
not particularly caring what we climb as long as we climb,
or even just hiking if the mood is bad.

I must say I knew Bruce Bendner and climbed with him a
few times but never knew he was Brutus. Sad that I learned
to appreciate him more after I learned more about him here
after his death.

Ahhh... Usually lurkers are pretty cool. Yes, I do know of a few silly goats that keep track of me just to create gossip but... That's life!
There will always be someone trying to make themselves look good by bringing you or another person down.

Just keep in mind a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt;
"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

Plus, you don't need to justify yourself to "anyone." Trying to correct someone that believes in gossip, or what they make up in their heads is like you are admitting to it. If you want to deal with them correctly, Laugh when you hear it, (it is pretty funny how hard they work on b.s.) ignore them and get busy having fun, climbing, living well!

If my life's tragedies and health issues have taught me anything... It's that life is too short for silly stuff. Stick to what matters and let the rest be for your entertainment.
Hugs,
AF

Using your real name is not a problem as long as you post only things that no one reads.

Thanks for that!.

You should post more, we're kinda like a big 'campfire' here, everyone's welcome, everyone can chime in when they want, or just sit back and listen to it all.

Don't be shy!

Jim, as long as people know you, I think it's not important to post your real name.

The problems come from the real posers.....

Great to get out of "Dodge". The ocean was too blown out for boards and my kinda kayak so went across the street to the bay. Sweet. Not a great pic, hazy day, but Coronado Bridge in background.

Hope all you Lurkers got out and played today :D

Headed home ..... got a good work out physically and peace mentally.

Hi Lynn-

Thanks for your many contributions to ST. I especially enjoyed the one getting ready for camping at the Facelift. Getting a cot that was too big for your tent is the sort of thing I would do too. I laughed and laughed through the whole thread! And I learned a lot in the process and downloaded all the good advice that you got from others. Thanks for not being afraid to ask. Meanwhile, I go with the person who said that even if you wrote under a handle, we'd be able to figure out that it was you.

As for family lurking and maybe not approving, I have lots of experience with that too. I am especially amazed when younger family members are more socially conservative and less adventurous than I am. I figure it's our job to show the way. If they can't follow, it's their loss. Keep on being yourself!
