I am another one who is contemplating a departure.
The only way to stay on the front page around here is to post about death, LEB, Obama/Bush, or some other highly inflammatory subject. These threads can easily garner 3,4,500 posts, because we love to hear ourselves argue.
None of these folks make one iota of progress changing anyone else's mind, because reasonable discussion quickly leaves the room, to be replaced by more and more vitriolic flaming.
I have witnessed many good climbing/adventure threads and topics disappear off the front page after 8-15 posts. Even first ascent stories can't compete with the bullsh*t threads.
I pesonally have had a couple climbing threads with hours of scanning and editing involved make it to near 100 posts, but only because of numerous bumps of my own.
I'm a genuinely nice guy who has posted about climbing, adventure, family, art/music and welcome threads. It's just too boring for the short attention spans and the big tabloid which this place is becoming. Nice guys finish last.
Russ left for awhile because of this stuff.
Tarbuster has scaled way back and it's not just because of his tendons.
Big Kahuna somehow departed all at once and has not resurfaced.
Buggs has limited attendance because of this B.S.
Rox may be on his way out as evidenced by his recent posts.
I will probably be unable to quit completely without a 12 step program, but I don't think I'll be wasting my time with hours of scanning.
I may cut and paste this very post into other threads from time to time, just so a few more folks will get a chance to read how I really feel. That plus the fact that people don't even scan back two pages to find out what the current yelling is about, they post their 2 cents based on the 4 posts before theirs.
Thanks Biotch.

A campfire where YOU piss on it to TRY put it out.
But all that happens is a bad smelling cloud of steam...

Growing Up and Wings of Steel were highly inflammatory.
It just proves my point.
Are you saying that it's worth it to the guy who puts so much work into scanning and editing?
Most participants don't do anything but post text, or the occasional photograph.
Where would we be without the folks who are willing to put some real effort into creating a photo thread?
Lois's Law- currently 165 posts (No offense Karl)

There is a really deep hole for putting away all the ugly things in the world.
It used to be pretty empty, but the last few years it started filling up really fast.

True dat survival....
THIS PLACE SUCKS FUKKIN ASSS.
Why anyone would take any time to add actual content is beyond me. Between the whiners, the Lois leg humpers, the haters, the wolf f*#ks, the Hamas fluffers, the pinkos, the jebus nuts, the right wing maniacs, the teachers union gougers, the Obama kool aid drinkers...... it is a near endless list of non climbing bullshiit that is easy to get sucked into. On that note, I don't know whether to quit, or post a pic of Ruth Buzzy......

I'm with ya Survival, I'm trying to quit too...it's an insidious addiction this place. I've cut way back too, but not enough. Just think if we spent this much time developing friendships and relationships in our proximate communities.
I need a 12-step program too, don't kid yourselves. ST is an addiction, not much different than a monkey, food and a lever!
Maybe we could start a "Support Group Thread" to help us quit...LOL! Guess that sorta defeats the purpose doesn't it.
Nice pics of your daughter's btw, go make copies and put them up at your local library or stores or enter them in a local contest...bet you'd get better feedback, same with your sister's too! Thx. for sharing.

Right on Russ! But you gotta admit the odd chihuahua and dwarf story doesn't hurt. All climbing and no spewing makes the Taco Stand a dry place.

many points here...
my presence is reduced because I really don't have anything to say on most of the OT posts... really, that's not why I spend time here.
This year, as was observed by both Peter H. and DR, I've been beset with many of the signs and symptoms of old age. Please listen carefully all you young people out there: getting old does change your body, you cannot continue to rely on the regenerative properties of youth once youth escapes you. That means a much more deliberate attention to keeping a total fitness level, not just a climbing fitness level. So I haven't been climbing nearly as much as I'd like, and consequently, I haven't been posting about climbing I haven't been doing.
I've got a couple of projects in the hopper, once I post the results I'm sure I'll get the canonical 20 posts and then have the thread dive to the bottom of the list... but obviously I don't post because the attention I receive...
But really, as I stated on some other thread recently by donini, the value of STForum is the first person perspective of climbing spanning back to the late 50s that is available from participants. It is the starting point for much of history, and it certainly fills out the necessarily limited views we have gotten from wonderful bards like Steve Roper over the years.
The political/social/etc stuff is just not going to be of value, ever... it is not why people go to STForum. I don't advocate change, but there is a breakdown of the modern social contract not to masturbate in public... but practice makes perfect, so if there is no really good intercourse to be had about climbing, go at it on the OT, by all means, but don't forget the real purpose and value.

Don't get me wrong - Pat Ament is still here, but if you recall, he did quit for a while.
Like Survival says, a 12 step program is needed to really stop this stuff. Anyone know when and where the first meeting is?
Edit: Nah, a 12 step isn't needed - at least not for me. If the boat keeps taking on water as it seems to be, I'll jump ship myself.

uhm, tmjesse, Crowley physically threatened people, not a joke at all. He prolly didn't mean it, but you just can't go around threatening people, online or other wise.
Me? I'm a hasbeenwannabeneverwas who still loves climbing.
My ignore button has always worked just fine.
But, it is time for me to go back a few pages, which I do all the time, and bump some good TR climbing posts, like Crimpies Mexico tr. (Later, I gotta get ready for a date, who is probably bummed to see me still on here this afternoon, argh this is addictive!)
Last winter, I spent a whole night in a funk over the politco threads and bumped a front pages worth of climbing related.
Good stories and TR's are stand alone reading material, not a lot of comments to be had besides Great Story! Awesome pics, thanks! and the like.
survival, you're stuff gets read plenty, too bad we don't have visit counters on the threads. I for one will try harder to bump those threads with some sort of comment.
Frankly, I've been unemployed and depressed, this sight helps keep my woes in perspective.
Thanks everyone!
oops, is it my 17" screen that made this too wide? It does that sometimes, sorry. Have no idea how to fix it.
NO! it was fattrads picture!

hossjulia, for the record, it was A. Crowley that was threatened with physical violence if he showed up at the Facelift. The perpetrator never showed. Crowley certainly offended some people here, but he never threatened anyone with harm. I’ll bet it is some petty, valley feud from the 70’s to early 80s that sparks the anger in some to this original park bum and climber. Anyone else here party in the meadow with him, say 35+ years ago?
