Between Chicago / Devils Lake climbers, cavers, occasional transplants, and even a few of us who spontaneously ignited, Southern Illinois always had some thread of climbing going on independent of John's stop in there. BUT, you can pretty well categorically state Southern Illinois climbing might never have gotten serious if he'd simply kept driving.
