So, this girl I am kind of dating wants me to go to her brother wedding with her in Hawaii. I am at a point in my life where I am so broke, and overworked that I have decided the only vacations I will take will involve climbing. So, basically I just want to know if I can look like a good guy and go with her and get at least one day of climbing in, or if I have to look like an ass and tell her I am unwilling to sacrifice days I could be climbing to see some guy I hardly know/ care about get married.

I dont know what island he is getting married on btw. but an overview of hawaiian climbing would be nice...

I imagine you'll get a lot of posts suggesting that you try surfing, I mean after all when in Rome....

other than that check out this link: http://www.rockclimbinghawaii.com/

Which Island?

In general....Sucks! Kind of like only desperate locals climb in Hawaii.

Still, there's some fun deep water soloing

I bouldered waiamea beach with my wife when I was there. It was pretty fun but nothing all that hard. There was one fun arete that looked a little stout. I'd go again if i was stuck on the island. Its more of a novelty than a session.

I was on the West end of Kauai on this beach that you were not suppose to drive your rental car (thankfully it was a jeep). The rock wall looked awesome until I went up and grabbed it...Very sharp very chossy/friable!

Anybody know of some good bouldering/deep water areas on Maui?

I've been all through the islands and I can say unequivocally: "Don't go to Hawai'i for the climbing! It sucks!" It's a total choss heap.

You can find marginal tiny pieces of climbable rock in Waimea Bay on northern Oahu, or Lumahai Beach on Kaua'i. But seriously, dude, don't go to Hawai'i for the climbing.

The lava tube caving is awesome! The beaches, snorkelling, sight-seeing and everything else are emphatically The Sh|t. Hawai'i is a vacation destination that is second to none so far as I am concerned.

Except for the climbing.

Edit: Oh my gosh! I forgot to mention the coffee!! [What was I thinking....]

"only desperate locals climb in Hawaii." Funny man Baba.

So the question is can you get in one day of climbing. Since you only ask for one day I say yes, we have one day over here. When you know what island, I'll help you out.

South Point on the big island. It is clean overhanging wildly featured rock, with deep water beneath you. There are even ladders that go down the cliff for boaters, so you can get back up. Make sure the surf is not to rowdy and be a good swimmer. Incredible place. Then hike down the coast to the unusual green sand beach.

Maui Mini Guide- in case you too are called to go to the island and still want to try and get a few problems in. Not a destination but Haleakala has potential.

Dragon's Teeth at the Kapalua Ritz- park at the golfer's bridge where Lower Honoapiilani road and Office road meet. Walk out the golf course edge avoiding buried Hawaiians to the rocky point. Couple very easy problems. VB- VB. Some over the water bouldering possible on the West side of the point. Look for sea turtles. Walk the big circle and leave some kine for the bouldering and surf gods. Not a real bouldering area. Don't bother with bringing climbing shoes. Nearby Honolua Bay has good snorkeling, shot this pic of an eel. sik.

Kapalua Beach (also near the Ritz)- Park where Iron Wood and Lower Honoapiilani meet 100 yards west/down from the golfer's bridge. Use public shore access to get to beach. Walk to West end rock wall. Two to three fun clean VB problems on a grey colored fin shaped formation (Shark Tooth). Left of this formation is a longer easy traverse (Kapalua Kling) with possibility for a couple hard slab problems. Only bring shoes if you have plenty of space in your bag. These landings aren't horrible, but holds sometimes look really friable.

Scramble over this wall to the next cove for more serious potential. However, landings suck and this area will only take off with people actually bringing multiple pads and spotters. On Maui? Doubt it.

Haleakala (2 locations) long drive to reach these, plus fee to enter National Park

Upper Visitor Center- one easily accessible bolder with a couple good problems. Hop behind the rail on the South side of the visitors center. High altitude bouldering on an island. weird. The Keiki Problem good holds to lay back crack and up. The problem faces into the crater.

Kalahaku Overlook- look for sign to silversword area. see NPS map of park. the overhanging bolder at the parking area. obvious. two known problems. This is the best bouldering I found on the island. However, I did not search real hard. Established first week August 2006. However, very possible that visiting climbers powered these out in tennies on visits. No Ka Oi traverse. V0- in teva sandals. Start at the crack (possible to start before that) and go to the right til you run out of rock.

Nene V0- in teva sandals. overhanging problem 4-5' in from the right side. good jugs to a step left finish.

Other possible locations include (not personally checked out)-

Black Rock- over the water bouldering.

Sorry my pics got pulled...

There is a new spurt climbing area on Oahu. About 50 well bolted routes. I'm not allowed to say more.

You mean Makapuu point,, there was an artical in Climbing or Rock and Ice six months back or so. There is also Mokuleia (sp)
on the north shore.

Contact Nohea (above) he's on Oahu.

I have been on the Big Island twenty years and have always kept an eye out for something climbable. South point wouldn't be bad, but make sure its a calm day. Most of the other stuff you could literally slice your fingers to the bone. either that or be pulling on stuff so loose you could pull it right off.

Hawaii is cool but like said above its not a climbing destination.

If your going to the Big Island ,shoot me an email and I can give you some good inside information.

Dood,

How much do you like this girl?

Hawaii is nice, climbing or not. So it takes a pretty good excuse to turn down a trip to Hawaii. Also, even if you hardly know/care about her brother, try not to phrase it that way.

North shore of Molokai. It's there and no one has ever been there besides me Kauk and Shultz. You need a boat or helicopter, we had a helicopter.

You can not access by land.

I have lived on Maui for 10 years and know of several places to climb, although, I rarely fool with it.
If climbing is your primary intrest let your girlfriend go to the wedding and take a real climbing trip some place that is better. You will both have more fun.
There is a guy on Oahu that posted some stuff on M.P. a while back and would probably show you around.
I will be happy to share what I know about the Maui stuff.
E-mail me if you decide to come.

I found the bouldering at Waimea to be pretty good, actually, with some pretty good highballs and a big ass overhang and plenty of other stuff to dink around on. Fantastic - no, but certainly worth it if you're there.

Bet there's some stuff on Molokai. ANd all those sea stack on La'nai would be interesting as well (but chossy).

If you get to Maui the summit of Haleakala is one of the most spectacular places anywhere, ever.

This crag on the North Shore has some truly fun climbing...I climbed there last summer and was pleasantly surprised at the rock quality and the abundance of routes up to 5.12. I only climbed one day, but if it wasn't for the south swell rollin' through town while I was there I would have gone back.
