One of those small aerosol cans of WD-40 and a Bic = flamethrower.

Ursack worked well...although it was not "beared". Interestingly, the manufacturers indicate you can just "tie it to a tree"...evidently if it gets "beared" the bear becomes bored and will finally leave it. Ummm....since we were not heavily in bear territory and using Opsaks (odor prevention) we just hung it off a tree as per instructions. We also use the aluminum liner so if it does get beared your food won't be smashed. If we were in heavy bear territory or more than a long day hike out we would have flown it in a more traditional way. The only breach was ground critters when I left it on the ground for a short time and didn't have it tied shut. Only lost half a cookie...my half of course!
When getting the permit the ranger wasn't exactly pleased but since it was allowed he couldn't restrict us from a permit. He kept going through a whole series of "what ifs". We survived with plenty to eat. Downside?????....yep, can't sit on the Ursack!
