Lived on the East slope of the Rockies,in Montana, for 7 years.
I enjoyed a lot of pass bagging in Glacier, Great Bear and Bob Marshal backcountry. I watched griz for hours, and of course I've hunted black bear, so I know enough to give 100% ID on bears. Frankly it's like confusing a Rhott, with a mini Doberman.

The griz has a totally different presence, completly menacing.
They are at the top of the food chain and everyone, especially
the bear, knows it. They simply move with authority.

So it would be good news to hear that goldie is still around...
however seesus, your claim about color and size don't really help in making a creditable ID.

Anybody got a good Bigfoot story? DOR

Interesting article on urban bears in NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/07/science/07bears.html
Says urban bears that feed on garbage spend less time foraging and more sleeping. Some get to be 400 lbs.

I had a friend who had just had his car door yarded open so Yogi could get at a couple of M&M's that had fallen on the floor! People had come and scared the thing away as we were just coming up and my friend nearly sh#t when he saw what the bear was actually after!!! I'd say keep the stuff out of the car at all times!

Leezus-well done, nice slap of reality.
up2top-if you saw plenty of fat bears before tourist started fattening them up, you are very, very, very old. My folks have had a place outside of the park for almost 60 years, and have plenty of memories of tourist trying to feed the park animals, bears included, to try to photograph them. They also remember plenty of injuries, no matter what the park rangers state. Humans are the scurge of the earth. We kill or destroy everything for pure self-interest.
There was a time the rangers of the park protected the wildlife and arrested folks who endangered them, and that included feeding them crap! The only thing left in the Valley that is pristine & natural is deer sh*t.

A few years back I left a haul bag and all kinds of food sitting in the back seat of an econo car in the Curry Village lot while I went for pizza. Upon returning I found that a bear had broken the window and torn up all the seats of a brand new mini van parked right next to me. The only item in the van was an empty Taco Bell soda cup. I figure the dirty wall socks laying on the haul bag kept the bear at bay. The food just wasn't worth the risk of toxic waste exposure.
