I find it interesting that the climber died due to a long sustained fall but yet folks are focused on her not wearing a helmet while discussing rock ice fall. Shouldn't the speculation at least be had she been wearing a helmet would she have survived the fall? Or if they had only been roped together ...

I think the helmet discussion was mostly about how the media seems to fixate on this kind of thing when reporting accidents.
I agree with the sentiment expressed by others that speculating on what might have been is in poor taste. RIP to the fallen climber.
I wear a helmet while climbing snow if I think that on the way down I might hit something, which for me is most of the time.
IMO Roping up on Avy Gulch is kind of ridiculous. I've seen guides short-roping their clients up it though.

based solely on my own personal observations, almost nobody ropes up or wears a helmet on the avalanche gulch route on shasta. i know the route changes w/ conditions etc., but when i did it, it was nothing more than a sometimes steep hike on non-technical snow. i've been way more gripped on the approach to lucky streaks in june.
my sincere condolences to the friends and family of this unfortunate climber.
i'm sure risking her life was never the intention.

I agree with the sentiment expressed by others that speculating on what might have been is in poor taste.
Indeed. There's a story on SF Gate about a 20 year old who was shot in Golden Gate
Park the other night, and a lot of clueless comments and assumptions were made as
to the character of the victim and what he was doing, ect. Well guess who happened
to post in the comments? The victim's FATHER. The kid did nothing according to witnesses
who have since posted.
My feeling is that it is almost certain that Ms. Enoki's friends and family will find this thread,
which is something to keep in mind. My condolences to Ms Enoki's loved ones.

Cherry was an exceptional, highly functioning human being and a very dear friend of a friend of mine here in Brooklyn. I am impressed by the general level of discourse on this blog. We are all human and of varying levels of ability and even the best prepared have to leave this earth sometime. Better to leave it from Mount Shasta than many other places I can think of. I'm sure that as climbers you all feel the same way.
