Yeah, I just rode over to where these pics were taken, and DAMN! went and bought a disposable at the gallery (total dipsh#t, I forgot my SLR at home) and rode a bike through the water to take some pics. Apparently, it's supposed to peak at 4 pm....

well, at least I have a good excuse not to be on El Cap right now...

I think this was a similar situation in 97'....huge snow year followed by alot of heavy rain in the high country.

The bummer is this means they (NPS) will probly start tearing everything up and moving it around causing a bigger mess.

So last weekend I drove halfway across the country, Minnesota to Portland. Started raining on our way out of the state, rained on us as we climbed Devils Tower, rained on us the rest of the way to Oregon...flew back to Minnesota and it has been raining constantly since I returned (yes, it's raining as I post this). On Saturday I leave for two weeks in the Valley, a trip we've been planning most of the past year...apparently in anticipation of my arrival, the rain and water there is getting a head start.

First off, I apoligize for my new status as "Rain God" and to everyone trying to climb anywhere I've been at recently.

Secondly, if I get to Yos and they don't let us in, we still have two weeks to kill. Having never been out West to climb before, any suggestions on which direction we should head? Red Rocks? JTree? Someplace closer to Yos in case it reopens? Watcha think?

I worry about The Lost Arrow. The vibrations must be driving the arrow to near failure.

There appears to be some good news. I spoke with some NPS folks earlier (about 4:30 pm pacific, 5/16) and they said, although it is a little early to call it, it doesn't appear that this flood is as bad as expected, and the water should recede pretty quickly (sometime tomorrow afternoon hopefully). Once it does, assuming there is no major infrastructure damage (car bridges out, etc.) the Valley should re-open. There is a chance of another rain event on Wednesday that is hit-or-miss at this point. It has potential to cause some more problems, but chances are good that the Valley will be open for business (and thousands upon thousands of tourons gaping at the waterfalls) for the weekend.

Something else to consider for those folks thinking about doing a weekend-warrior trip: last weekend was so busy in the Valley that the NPS had to restrict access for part of the day because there was simply nowhere for all the cars to go. You may find yourself circling endlessly looking for a spot to park.

Poor Chongo... flooded out of his hole and lookin' like a wet rat.

For all those looking for a warm fuzzy place to climb Flagstaff just became perfect. Though the Rain God should keep away!

Hi Crimpy - welcome back (?). Seen my thumbs? I miss 'em. FBI thinks terrorists. Not good.

The Valley is open again.
Roads in Yosemite Valley were re-opened at approximately 6:30 AM on May 17, 2005. Initial assessments indicate that roadways were not damaged during yesterday's high water.
It is fun to see the river flow data over the last few days: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ca/nwis/uv?station_nm=yosemite&search_station_nm_match_type=anywhere&huc_cd=18040008&index_pmcode_00065=3&index_pmcode_00060=4&index_pmcode_00010=&index_pmcode_00021=&index_pmcode_00025=&index_pmcode_00045=&index_pmcode_00054=&index_pmcode_00055=&index_pmcode_00059=&index_pmcode_00062=&index_pmcode_00076=&index_pmcode_00095=&index_pmcode_00300=&index_pmcode_00400=&index_pmcode_70969=&index_pmcode_72019=&index_pmcode_72020=&index_pmcode_72114=&sort_key=site_no&group_key=NONE&sitefile_output_format=html_table&column_name=agency_cd&column_name=site_no&column_name=station_nm&column_name=lat_va&column_name=long_va&column_name=state_cd&column_name=county_cd&column_name=alt_va&column_name=huc_cd&period=7&begin_date=&end_date=&format=gif&date_format=YYYY-MM-DD&rdb_compression=file&list_of_search_criteria=huc_cd,station_nm,realtime_parameter_selection

You can see the river rises in the afternoon and keeps rising in the evening, to fall after mindight until the morning's sun heats it up again.

The max flow was May 16 at noon, at 6000 cfs, as opposed to a more normal 1000 cfs earlier in the week. As of 5 pm today, it was back down to 2410 cfs.
