Michael's Ledge, Lower Brother
Fri Nov 7, 2008 in Camp 4 parking lot I meet cleo and Bob (NPS intern geologist) for a fun adventure to scout out possible area for her rockfall research project.
Up the Michael's Ledge route on the Lower Brother. This is a 4th class scramble until you get to the major rock fall area mid cliff, then it is a very loose 4th class scramble...
...done in the 1920s by Charles Michael, it has been mostly a down climb, as Roper describes: "This route follows the broad, wooded ledge diagonaling up and right across the south face of Lower Brother. Although it affords the easiest way to the summit of Lower Brother, Michael's Ledge is not recommended due to brush, uninteresting class 1 scree slopes, and rotten rock."
It was all those things, and more!
Here is cleo and Bob a bit higher on decomposing granite
At some point it gets rotten, and loose, and a bit scary... cleo cleo off around the corner, there is a lot of air to here right!
One spooky thing about this place is the rather huge rockfall that occurred in the recent past, likely from this face
While I was belaying cleo across I was listening to the rocks whizz by. I got up to her and we contemplated crossing what one friend refers to as "the Ledges of Horror," which are quite doable if you are used to being one of those ducks at the Carnival shooting games... we didn't cross after hearing yet another projectile plunge past.
We did get a bit of work done... and managed to get out before it was too dark, here is alpenlite on Half-Dome taken during our descent.
A fun day to a place I'd never been. What more can you ask for?

Ed,
Have you ever done those obscure 1930s-era routes on Lower Bro? I don't have Roper at hand now to give you the correct names, but I remember those routes being very fun, in a mountaineering sense, especially due to the views. The ridge on top of the Lower Bro. is cool.
Has anyone ever done the Banks' route in the corner between Lower and Middle Bro? I keep promising myself to take a look.
Why is it Lower Bro., Middle Bro., and Eagle Peak? I’ve always wondered.

Be careful out there Mr. Ed - those 'portable' routes invoke high risk behavior ;-)

I went up there years ago just to enjoy the view. You can look straight down onto the meanders on the Merced - very pretty. Didn't go past the point where the trees ended, though. It looked pretty scary out there.

ablegable would know... he's at Red Rocks this week but I'll ask him when he returns. I've got to give him an update on activities up there.
Talking to certain knowledgeable geologists they said that the features left after large rockfalls (and that one was large) are generally stable. We didn't go as far as we were thinking because of the occasional rockfall while we were there. There are other signs of rockfall I'd rather not discuss in public, but I will if you're interested, send me an email...
