Best way: don't check anything.
Worst way: expect a different answer now, than the replies a few moments ago.

Good luck, and have a safe and nice trip! Train trips can be a lot of fun.
Also, "illegitimi non carborundum". Not good Latin, but the sentiment seems to apply. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegitimi_non_carborundum
Edit: I suspect that not many SuperTopians, apart from jstan, have recent experience with train travel on the U.S.

Do you have to take it?
I know someone who spent $2,000 to recover lost data of the company laptop.
Do not know if it was the X Ray at the airport, a bounce taken somewhere along the way.
You should be OK, just back everything up.
Too bad it's a pain to swap out the hard drive, unlike the desktop models.

I would keep the laptop with you. Too valuable to leave
checked where it could be stolen, banged up, etc.
Take no chances. . .
and have a safe trip

I travel a lot...
"I don't check anything that I truly value..."
...wise words.
If you have to bring it, keep it with you no matter where you travel, how you travel, or why you travel.
Have fun!
Cheers,
DD

i would never ever check my laptop. have you ever bought anything with it? ever written anything personal in yr email? have you ever entered a social security number, account password, credit card number?
if so, it's almost as bad as leaving your credit cards in your suitcase.

Sorry, but after 44 posts spanning two separate threads (prior to me posting),
my interest was thoroughly piqued, and I was captivated. And now I can't stop
wondering how the mind-bending, public-discussion-worthy puzzle was solved...

If she doesn't like the medicine she can quit dishing it out Dr. Schitt. A while back she started posting on my threads and ripping me a new one every chance she got. If she is going to do that, she should learn to take the heat in return.
You need to research the term "stalking" before you start using it.

I heard she was 28.
But since I'm trying to be nice to her, I think I'll start thread stalking Dingbat Milkturd.
He's a big an idiot as SS can be a lot of the time, and he has more experience at it. Plus, he REALLY should know better by now.
PS SS, don't check your laptop!! And if you are going to be on Amtrack for two days, be sure to take a lot of MONEY. Worst mistake I ever made was thinking I could write a check on the train, LOL. Hell, they took a check for the ticket. But not for the food. DOH. MAN were they rude about it too. Last time I ever rode the train. Over 33 years ago and I'm still pissed at the piss poor service from Amtrack.

Dr. Schitt's five step process to being a "victim".
1. Rip on people who have never said a critical word to you.
2. Do it again, again, again, and again.
3. Only speak critically of an individual after like-minded folks have clearly outnumbered the individual being criticized(takes a lot of initiative and bravery to do that).
4. Cry "victim" when you get a little bit of return fire.
5. Get Dr. Schitt to defend you and carry on the "victim" mantra so you can take the mythical(in your world) "high road".
