The Himalayan climbing community has just lost one of its most talented and strongest climbers on Annapurna I today... Inaki was a great person and spirit, always cheerful and smiling, and loved by all who ever got to meet him. I had the privilege to spend some time with him a few weeks back while he, Don Bowie and Horia were working on the route. Its truly a sad day and a big loss to all family and friends... God speed for the next journey Inaki

Mike, Inaki was of the same mold as you and the rest of our good friends, you would have liked him immediately he was a great person who had one of those cheerful & magnetic personalities, not to mention being bad ass, as he had already climbed 12 of the 14.. 8,000 meter peaks, without air and always in good style. The way the climbing community gathered to help him is a testament to how much he was respected and loved... Its strange as normally I can sense it when something is off, I had just spent a couple months in the area and saw Inaki everyday for the last of those two weeks and all I felt was he and the boys were solid, never for one second did I think he would have any problems on this climb... the whole thing came as a major surprise, and of course sadness of the loss, his family must be crushed.

I did not know this man with the brilliant smile, but a very close loved one of mine died recently and unexpectedly, as did Inaki Ochoa. (My husband was a climber whose death was not through climbing but by an unknown disease) I know somewhat the pain of your loss and I will keep his family and friends in my heart and in my prayers.

Like Ochoa's friends and team, we did all we could to keep the one we loved alive to no avail.

What can be done now? Appreciate the heck out of the life Inaki Ochoa lived here on this planet and dedicate your life to making sure others whose lives cross your path receive all the love and respect you can give them while they are here. (As I'm sure you are.)

Respectfully,

24 Iñaki Ochoa de Olza's family expresses gratitude
Published in Untagged by Web Team
It is about impossible to personally express our gratitude to all those who helped us at overcoming our pain of loosing Iñaki, we would like to tell that through the words of so many cheer messages, through the vital cooperation and the work developed along those intense days of personal efforts at fighting his deadly disappearing, have been an important medicine to sooth our pain.

The disappearance of someone as healthy and stable, so bright and joyful as Iñaki has awaken a social solidarity movement with his way of walking through life and mountains, far above expectations. By noticing the help you all wanted to bring him right in front of death, you allow us to believe and feel that there are reasons not to forget his joy, and to hope that his style helps others to build their own love for freedom.

Father, Mother and Brothers of Iñaki Ochoa de Olza Seguín, May 23, 2008

Captain Chaos, whoever you are...how I hear what Ochoa's Family members are saying. Please tell them how much we at ST care about the loss of their loved one.

The outpouring of stories, memories, kindness, love and support from old friends and virtual strangers in the climbing community make all the difference in the world to those that grieve the loss of their VERY loved one.

The words we speak make the one they love live again in their hearts and minds...make them so very real even though they are not here anymore. Words spoken with thought and love make the pool of grief less full.

Peace, Lynne

Thanks Lynne... you can be sure Inaki's family are shattered right now, you can also be sure the entire climbing community Inaki was connected too is helping them through this. Even though we all know perfectly well how deadly and unforgiving Himalayan climbing can be, he was so solid and dialed that he was the last one you would think something like this would happen too. The fact that it was not a climbing mistake, avalanche, or accident of some sort that took his life, but an ailment makes it all that more ironic, but in the end that's probably the only thing which could have taken him out and sadly it did. Thanks to all of you for your thoughts... Craig

My condolences to you--his friend--and to Iñaki's family for such a sad loss.

The story about his decision to boycott the Olympics was a beautiful example of a man of true character.

Wow. I'm shocked.

I met Inaki in the Everest area in 1998. I was there just trekking, by myself. He was coming down from soloing... we bonded over delicious dal bhat in Namche and hiked from Namche to Lukla together. I'm sure there are many others with much more detailed and meaningful stories about him, but I remember him fondly. Great energy and kindness.

What a loss. Condolences to his friends and family.

Saddened by the loss of a brother mountaineer.
My condolences to his family and friends.

It is a hard thing to explain, this compulsion to go and play in the mountains, but it is something we do and it is a place not always hospitable to our play, in a moment there are the crystalline ridges and the deep azure sky and the snow and rock and the sun warming us and the cold wind blowing; in that moment we feel alive and driven by the spirit of mountaineering and by the power of the mountains, in those moments we think we know why we are alive.

Someday when I'm in that moment I will think of him, as I often do of those mountaineers who did not return. And though I never met him or climbed with him, I'll believe that we would have shared our love of the mountains.
