Wow Blair-A lot of my favorite people in that pic.

I can't help but think it had an existing electrical problem. Chuck (second from left in pic above-Hugh's son) told me about how they used to live upstairs of the store when he was little, but there was a fire, so they never fixed it up and never moved back in...

Ya Ben,

I heard the store was a fire waiting to happen. As I'm sure you know in Yosemite they call that historic. I'm going to miss buying 30 year old dusty items that were sometimes just what you needed. It was amazing the things you could find in there. Like that blue stuff barbers keep their combs in. Or a cool hat with a propeller on it. After moving from EP and then being back there for a visit the store was the one thing that never seemed to change. I guess except for the ashes we can just remember it how it was. Now that I'm thinking about it even the river after the flood was so different. New swimming holes, new beaches, new islands and all the old ones changed or gone. But there sat the good old store. Yep I'm gonna miss her.

CF, awesome pictures. It's weird to look out the window and see where the store used to be, but isn't anymore. I can't imagine how strange it must be for people who have lived here longer than I have.

My understading is the store was what gave El Portal that
"Northern Exposure" vibe that lots of us saw on TV, and
you local folks there lived.

It must be a huge loss...

Condolences to you all, hope something good takes its place.

From Friends of Yosemite Valley

----------------------------------

In the aftermath of the El Portal Market burning to the ground, we realize that El Portal residents may be wondering if the recent Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling, finding the 2005 Merced River Plan invalid and the NPS in violation of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (WSRA) as well as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), could somehow stall movement towards the community having a functioning grocery store.

In light of the Ninth Circuit's ruling, we feel there is no need for delay in restoring a functioning food market for the community. To re-build the market on the same site, within the existing footprint of the historic structure which burned, would be reasonable and certainly a benefit to the community of El Portal; especially if it were built with respect to the historic integrity of the previous structure, while maintaining the already NPS established "Cultural Landscape" of Old El Portal. We also believe that if other structures just east of the former store and immediately adjacent to Highway 140 were to be considered for use as a temporary or permanent building for an El Portal food market, than this would also be acceptable in terms of the Wild and Scenic River, as long as any pre-existing structure used is not enlarged beyond its current footprint.

Wasn't a contractor doing remodel work on the store when it burned? If so depending on the cause of the fire the contractors liability insurance might cover some or all of the damage. ???????????

Blair: Maybe, but if they determine the cause was faulty electrical (people have told me it was aluminum wire inside, but I haven't heard it officially confirmed), I don't think it will be on the contractor's insurance.

Hard to tell...

I guess it depends on if the contractor had exposed the electrical or had worked on it. I would think it was in his or her scope of work. Actually I should back up a little and say... If the fire is determined to be caused by the work preformed or simply the fault of the contractor the damage should be covered. Hard saying not knowing. Mabey ill bid on the re-build. It would be nice to be part of all that. Except for the Pork Circus part

Besides electrical, left behind rags - with wood finishing products can ignite a fire. I know of two house fires started - when folks were staining their hard wood floors.

Nita:

Rags saturated in polyurethane stainers/finishes will "spontaneously erupt" when left in closed containers (a dumpster with the lid on, for example), but all signs now point to electrical.

Blair-Are you coming to Spring Fling this Saturday? I'll be surfing Gauge Hole on Saturday morning with all the boyz, and then maybe go climb Haley Anna on Parkline before the music starts. It would be REALLY great to see you two guys. I miss you.
