interesting, Z... I was just listening to DG yesterday. this one is pretty knock-out for a crappy recording. what a brilliant picker and musician with massive chops.
you were there: the piedmont (anyone remember the classroom film series You Were There?
The Piedmont (French for foothill) is an eastern U.S. Region extending north to N.J. and south to central Ga and Al. It lies between the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the main body of the Appalachians. The larger Piedmont has an upland and lowland section.
From the Piedmont come a strain of blues (Piedmont Blues) that differs from Delta, Highland and Chicago Blues due to the influences of ragtime, country and traditional songs. Most of the Piedmont Blues artist are from the Carolinas, Virginia, Alabama and Georgia.
There is a finger style pickin' associated with it based on thumb picking of the bass strings and syncopated melodies picking of treble strings using forefinger (& others) creating a ragtime sound.
Keeping the Piedmont style alive are people like Keb' Mo', Ry Cooder, Mark Knopfler and Jorma Kaukonen
