i have the vinyl of most of that lomax work; most of those songs were recorded at the Parchman Prison Farm in MS.
rosie is a song about the women who weren't too far outside the gates that tempted the prisoners (and were visited by others).
the work songs were a means to regulate the rhythm of swinging axes or hammers when chopping large trees, laying RR track and building levees. the call and answer song helped insure that no de-limbing or bone crushing blows came to a fellow prisoner on the gang.
