Everyone has a job. While we flake out the rope and compare cliff to guidebook, Sophie keeps a sharp watch for chipmunks. She can do this for hours, with occasional sudden bursts of activity. Fortunately on this terrain the chipmunks have the advantage.

We found Sister while on a bike ride in 1997. We brought her home, took her to the vet and determined she was about 6 months old. The first two years she went through the usual crazy stage. Full of energy and crazy! She was never a problem though. Never tore anything up just full of life!
Over the years she was the best dog you could ever want. Never got sick, always loveable and friendly to everyone but protected her home with a powerful presence. This past April she stumbled and fell to the floor. I never gave it a second thought just thinking she slipped on the stained floors. Her hips have been bothering her but she still got around ok with the help of Rimadyl an anti-inflamatory.
We called the vet and it was determined she had a stroke. For the next two weeks she was unalbe to walk so we helped her get around by holding her hips. Being hopeful she would come around and regain the use of her legs as sometimes dogs with strokes can rebound but that was not going to happen. My other dogs would sit around Sister outside on the hill overlooking the pond. It was though she wanted to take in all the life she could, it was more than obvious. Over those last two weeks she had some days where she was really alert and taking it all in, then other days she just slept. My wife and I wanted her to go on her terms, she was not in pain and was comfortable. She lived her life with all the grace of a regal dog.
Sister died in April she was 18 years 3 months old. We miss you Sis:)

Nice post TMayse,
Sasha asked me yesterday "How old will Raja be in 4 years?"
"Seventeen or Eighteen." I said, while thinking private thoughts.
Your post gives me some hope that they may have a few more years together. Thanks

I think this is very important. It is all too easy to cling to them when we shouldn't and too easy to euthanize them too soon.

I have a cat in that situation right now with severe heart disease and his kidneys are starting to go. By paying careful attention, I eliminated a blood pressure medicine that was giving him side effects and now he can stay out in the back yard all night by himself which has improved his psychological well being no end. He clearly doesn't have much time left but he too is trying to take it all in as much as possible. I have four dogs as well and they are remarkably attentive to him as they know it too.

This thread is the best!

Since I like to bring politics into everything, one thing Dems and Repubs have in common is a love of animals, especially dogs.

The rotten Islamic cockroaches? Not so much.

Two months ago, this one couldn't walk more than a few yards. I had a spot in the yard picked out to bury her.

Now, after successful cervical ventral slot decompression surgery, she's back "chasing" bunnies.

She knows she can't match their speed, like she once could, so she "stalks" them now. Sneaks up on them.

I can't let her catch one, because she'd shake the hell out of it if she did, and probably break her neck again.

Today ( 8-14 ), she turns 8 1/2.

We've got a bumper crop of bunnies this year. Max was intrigued by them when their population started increasing, then he realized his short legs were no match. Now he barely notices them...but grazing on their Kix is an endless fascination to him.

I wanna shoot the little invasive species. Does that make me a bad guy?

No. I find it hard to do myself, relocating after trapping in a Havahart trap is a little easier on my mind. I also allow my dogs to ferret them out and control the population. It might be better said that my dogs assist in the bunny count, I have little power in controlling their canine instincts.

Hawks are another story, my dogs can't help me in that ongoing battle.

Flipflop, that is a beautiful dog, hope you reap more years of happiness with her.

Great morning checkin! Lovin' all those beautiful animals.
The bunnies...kinda makes me sad...however I feel the same way about the raccoon family that has invaded my home turf. New babies, momma hissing and growling at me every night when I go to chase them away.

One of my little dogs (Five) he's the fifth one :) came down with what we think is Myasthenia Gravis.
He's better but it worried the heck out of us. We had no clue as to what was going on, even my vet was stumped until I found Myasthenia Gravis on the web. His symptoms matched it. He's better now but still a bit uncordinated compared to what he was before the symptoms surfaced. It's been a couple years now...

This is the link for dogs the previous link was for humans. Kinda funny, we treat them like humans, at least at my home we do:)

May God bless all the sick dogs on the TacoStand, and in the world.

Sick dogs bring me down to a bad place. They don't seem to understand what's wrong and they suffer.
