You guys should come to utah for loads and loads of this kind of drama. At least your 'forests' can grow back faster than a couple of hundred years...

I say close those roads! You SoCal softies make out like you driving around matters more than the woods, and thats just not right. Get outta your cars boys, it will be even better when you get there!

Last day for public comment is today. If you haven't commented you can't appeal.

Access to Fresno Dome and the Balls are not at risk, according to the original maps put out for review several years ago. Only a few short spurs will potentially be closed to Fuller Buttes, Grey Eagle area, The Lookout, & Lost Eagle, according to the maps from 2 years ago. I don't think the best access to Squaw Dome was slated as a potential closure. This was my understanding for roads commonly used by climbers in SoYo, although I haven't read this recent posting by the FS - although I did hear that they recently opened up the review for public comment once again.

I'll read the link above now.

This discussion has only recently become personally relevant to me... last weekend I took the kids on their first camping trip in Stanislaus National Forest, up Herring Creek. It was a mixed experience for me:
* Nice to have the freedom to just go wherever we want and camp
* Not nice to see so many tree stumps
* Not nice to see so many ATVs and RVs back there
* Not nice to hear semi-automatic gunshots,
and see dudes driving around with huge rifle targets on the roof of their car

So I like the freedom I get to exercise, but I don't like seeing the results of others exercising their freedom :)

That is the USFS "land of many uses" and the department of agriculture for you.

I personally think it is a good idea for them to be forward-thinking and lock down the dirt roads. There are more than enough existing, and left unregulated these places might turn into a dustbin like most Bureau of Land Management areas.

If there is a good road you want to see somewhere, speak up and say why. But I'm surprised to see how many people are speaking up against this.... just goes to show that climbers are not by definition environmental preservationists. Many are just folks looking to get away from regulation and authority, and "be free."

I think freedom comes with responsibility, and in the case of USFS that responsibility is to cap the existing mess network of dirt roads and let nature do her thing for a while to regenerate the places.

Then again, maybe the road closures would be an attempt to hide new timber sales and future mass clear-cutting efforts? Who knows.

Bump (and kudos) to this thread for discussing a land management issue with posts that discuss pros/cons in respectful, articulate terms, rather than simply flaming the 'jackbooted FS Ranger Tool'.

Pretty funny that BITD the FS would fall all over themselves building roads for the logging companies! Now we can't even use those roads we paid for how many times?

Of course Park Service employees ignore Forest Service mandates, they have enough work to do in their own jobs.In fact, a Park Service employee has no authority to enforce Forest Service mandates.

kev,

I don't know about you, but I kinda like camping there below Gray. And the campsite on top of Chiquito is the coolest campsite I have ever stayed in. The approach from the Gray site is a perfect length, long enough to keep most folks away but really only a good warm up. Now walking in from the highway would be a bit more than a warm up. Plus, now where will we camp? I sure don't want to pay 15-20$ a night to camp there.

It would suck for that road to get closed. Especially in light of this weekends the improved lower camping site.

Comment away to them I am.

Jeff,

Um it's going down this weekend (sat?) so the beer cost has yet to be determined.

I'll try to post some pics tonight. I've got to email a bunch of people too. You going to Lost Eagle shindig friday PM? Also I agree with you my take on this has changed over the last few years as I've explored the area further. Must avoid these closures...Funny, I'm talking to some access fund guys about some other issues at another crag. Perhaps I'll contact them this afternoon.

To Everyone else,

Has anyone waded through the 5 options the forest service is offering us or does anyone have a list of specific roads other than

"approach road to Fueller Buttes, sqaw dome, gray and red eagle, fallen eagle, etc?"

Kev, I'm always the last to know!

I think I climbed at Lost Eagle once, can you refresh my memory on how to get there. Somewhere off the Griz road?

Don't worry Tork, kev is playing up the shindig. It's not the REAL "formal" shindig, (possible Salsafest or whatever), which will be hosted by the SSCA on July 18. As far as I know, nothing is happening at LE this weekend other than a handful of folks climbing. But maybe I'm out of the loop...

Thanks for being honest. Like Kindergarten we need to remember to share the sandbox with each other. Anybody out there is likely to have far more in common with you then 99% of the public. Try offering one of these different forest users a cold beer some time, I'm betting you would be pleasantly surprised.

Kev,
There was talk months(?) ago of July 4th as a potential date for some sort of shindig, methinks. But a few of us regulars will be there Fri & Sat. Big gatherings are not in keeping with the spirit of SoYo anyway. :) The official SSCA event is July 18-19. You coming Sat? Email me.
