If you're seriously
into FUNK.

These are crate diggers

Sure miss Bachar when it
comes to matters of this
sort.

I second that emotion...

Bachar was into funk big time. I had the high privilege of laying down a couple of tracks with him at his garage studio in Mammoth. He played his sax extra funky, we had a blast.

Seeing his posts in the first page of this thread made me smile.

Gotta have that funk!

Miles Davis explained the problem is that white musicians tend to lag behind the beat. Case in point: the death of funk by disco. The African music its based on has an inverted rythym, with accents on the 1 and 3 beats, instead of 2 and 4. Also, like Miles Davis' music, Afrobeat was modal - there are no chord progressions or changes, ever. Sometimes the saxophones sound completely out of tune, but the timing and articulation is unbelievably precise. A different concept of music in many ways.

Fela Kuti was a Nigerian revolutionary. From wikipedia:

In 1977, Fela and the Afrika '70 released the album Zombie, a scathing attack on Nigerian soldiers using the zombie metaphor to describe the methods of the Nigerian military. The album was a smash hit and infuriated the government, setting off a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic, during which one thousand soldiers attacked the commune. Fela was severely beaten, and his elderly mother (whose house was located opposite the commune) was thrown from a window, causing fatal injuries. The Kalakuta Republic was burned, and Fela's studio, instruments, and master tapes were destroyed. Fela claimed that he would have been killed had it not been for the intervention of a commanding officer as he was being beaten. Fela's response to the attack was to deliver his mother's coffin to the Dodan Barracks in Lagos, General Olusegun Obasanjo's residence, and to write two songs, "Coffin for Head of State" and "Unknown Soldier", referencing the official inquiry that claimed the commune had been destroyed by an unknown soldier.

I did not want to intrude on memories of his friends so I did not add pictures.
I would have swiped them from Google images basically the Taco archuves~ And ~ still may?

This fits much better in the Regrets Thread, or maybe in the JB Thread?
The JB Appreciation thread needs a bump.

I only met JB once when camping in the "Badies"? out past Bishop, I was with a crew that was moving from the east coast. We were camped away from some festive folks, our crew of 5, glorified geek lab techs. new hire executives for a big Pharma company who were going to fire a bunch of cool people; major azzholz. I was getting covered/paid to drive and guy-friday the whole trip.

As the moon rose someone was screeching a horn from somewhere in the rocks and lights and partying noises had my fool "supporters" annoyed enough to want to move or tell the gathering & that mad man to STFU. I wasn't sure what to tell them. The other tucks were parked at least half a mile away across the sagebrush.

I said I would go and ask them to tone it down if it went on. I was told that if I did I should take my kit & find my own way from there. I was owed 3k and 6 months of housing in Marin for the trip.

I knew who it had to be...

I said no, but would he like me to at least get the horn noise to stop?
Anthony,(Toney Baloney) already a prick, was a soon to be nightmare suit wearing overpaid department head,
told me again not get into a party or drink anything & to be back in an hour.

I hit the desert heading straight for the pile where I could see the silhouette.
A stupid No0b move, Catclaw, and Cactus brush and prolly scorpions & rattlers but as I arrived at the rocks, bleeding, it was John B.

In the way he had of being great and reserved at the same time, he asked what I was & what I was on If I needed help or what the I thought I was doing striding across the desert at night?

I explained that I'd heard the party, he said what party? I told him that I was rope gun & slave for the east coast invaders, a rock pulling fool & I knew who he was. we hung for a bit reminiscing ogling the moon, We knew some mutual characters, had a few things in common in a marginal way, it made my year. To have sat laughing, hearing a few short riffs, sharing just soaking in his regular my un-imaginable dream.

He explained where they were parked (Bachar rocks?) at the picnic table, where we could meet in daylight and walked away into the moonlight shaking his head.

I never would have been able to make the move I was trying to make if on my 10th day in the promised land having had the truck impounded, I joined the royalty of climbers while I was slaving for weekend top roper Gumbies from the Gunks.
A major regret that . . .
