20 years ago I knew a guy who rated everything with his "funk scale."
"That rates a 2 on the funk meter." He would say.
He was always giving cool stuff a really low rating. I thought he was kinda backwards in his thinking until I found out that his "funk" refered to the odor, not the funkiness.

Bump up to the New Funksters. J5, Gorillaz, BEP's etc. Check it:
Yeah, that's Funky (Funky)
Yeah, that's Funky (Funky)
Yeah, that's Funky (Funky)
If it smells like Funk it must be us
The Funk funk full foul stinky it's stanky stuff
(repeat)
If it smells like Funk it must be us
Cause nobody's Funky as us, Cause we keep it Stinky (Stinky)
We keep it Stinky, (Stinky)
(repeat)
Stinky, Stinky, Stinky,
The Funk phenomenon, we Funk you on n' on
There's no need to hold your nose,
Cause this funk stink like a rose
Big booty Funk, Toe jam Funk,
Underarm Funk, like you headlocking a Skunk'
Reekin' like diseased athlete's feet,
The stench didn't come till after this beat
Smellin' like droors no weezin no pause
Put your hand up on the speakers get smelly ass paws
You know we was coming before we entered the door
Cause you could smell the rhyme when we was walking down the hall
We bring the Funk worse then a wet dog
Stinkin' like fat ladies poopin'out Logs
We drop enough poo to keep them toilets clogged
Keep the people jumpin' like them Bullfrogs
The first one who smelt it ain't the one who delt it
Black Eyed Peas keep the scent blind like delta
Funky like onions you fryin'(Sure is Funky) girl you ain't lyin'
(CHORUS)
Yo' you Funkin' with the Funk family
The non fabricated factual faculty'
We formulatin' up in a factory
Focusin' on the energid' of fluid flow free'
We flawless, everything is for free
We florish and we flaunt our flavour freshly, huh'
Can you believe we flip them frequency's and
Freak MCs they leave all frantically but'
Our intentions are to be friendly but
They fightin' when we start the freestylin' frenzy
I funk up ya' flat till your girlfriend beef
Fillin all anatomy, bringin' me flatery, huh'
She'll be diggin these rhymes that ease beats
Like celulite lyrics all flabby
We bring the funk to your festivities
If you think something stank then it must be the peas!
If it smells like Funk it must be us
The Funk funk full foul stinky it's stanky stuff
(repeat)
If it smells like Funk it must be us
Cause nobody's Funky as us, cause we keep it Stinky
(Funky, Funky, Funky, Funky)
Celulite overweight stankin' MCs
Stench smells so strong it's insanitary
Cause you can sense me a mile away so Jinky
With the jungle Funk sound from Serengeti
Meaty, Fat, Nasty like miss Fat booty's tights
Gettin' dirty like mudfights and dirtbikes
Turning these droors black they used to be white
And we shittin' on these tracks that you gonna' need to wipe
The odor's so contagious that it shows up in your dream,
Man, you could pick me out like food in between
Your two front teeth cause you be lackin' the streets
We got beefy ass beats that we bumpin' in the streets
We so nice n' sweet like steak box n' feet
Sour underarm Funk you ain't washed in a week
And, man, we be reekin' every day or weekend
We could all bounce to the Funk and the season
Bounce, bounce, bounce...Whoo!
haha haha
Yeah that's Funky', Yeah that's Funky'
If you smellin' somethin funky
then you know it got to be nobody other than Apl, Will n' Taboo
Cause if you know that if it smells like Funk then it must be us
If you smellin' Fat Funk then it must be us
If you smellin' something Funky
then you know it got to be nobody other than Apl, Will n' Taboo
Cause you know that if it smells like Funk than it must be us
If you smellin' elephants than it must be us
If you smellin' somethin Funky
then you know it got to be nobody other than Apl, Will n' Taboo
Cause you know that if it smells like Funk then it must be us
If you smellin' elephant poo it must be us

check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk
not a bad description
Funk is an American musical style that originated in the mid- to late-1960s when African American performers blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony, and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. Unlike R&B and soul songs, which had many chord changes, funk songs are often based on an extended vamp on a single chord.
Like much of African music, funk typically consists of a complex groove with rhythm instruments such as electric guitar, electric bass, Hammond organ, and drums playing interlocking rhythms. Funk bands also usually have a horn section of several saxophones, trumpets, and in some cases, a trombone, which plays rhythmic "shots".
Influential African American funk performers include James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton, and The Meters. Notable 1970s funk bands included Parliament-Funkadelic, Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, The Commodores, and Kool & the Gang. Funk music was a major influence on the development of 1970s disco music and funk samples are used in most styles of hip hop music, and it's also the main influence of Go-Go.

hey there mister E... oooops, sorry, there.... climbing-dance ought to do it... but i was more worried, as to doing a cha-cha, rumba, or tango, up the rock-face, instead of minding the climb...
way, to go then, .... as i truly understand, a good climb, is music to the ears... one simply MUST dance to that... :)
more than reckoned, i reckon ..... :)

Let me put this diplomatically:
If you can't groove, you got to move.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQvnLCCYJ2A&index=7&list=PL2C2NXpTf8HDI_RLo8XW9pXStRpCXz3gE
The Diplomats of Solid Sound is a soul band from Iowa City, Iowa.
Band members include Doug Roberson on guitar, Nate Basinger on Hammond Organ, Forrest Heusinkveld on drums and percussion, David Basinger on baritone sax, and Eddie McKinley on tenor sax, Sarah Cram on vocals, and Kathy Ruestow on vocals.
All tracks produced by Lack of Afro and distributed by Record Kicks.
The disc inaugurates the collaboration between Iowa’s soul-funk band, which already made “Instrumental Action Soul” (2001), “Let´s Cool One” (2003) or “Destination Get Down!” (2005), and the three songstresses Sarah Cram, Katherine Ruestow and Abigail Sawyer, renamed on the occasion “The Diplomettes”.
The LP “Diplomats of Solid Sound ft The Diplomettes” thus logically proposes powerful groovy instrumentations highlighted with the warmth and the harmonies of the voices. As demonstrates the great “Trouble Me”. You can incidentally still buy the digital version of the album on Bandcamp.

"This Voice" Belongs to an Albanian opera singer named Inva Mula Tchako. XD And the title of this aria or peace she is singing is called Il Dolce Suono. They ONLY edited the part where the pitches changes (towards the end, because a human voice can't change pitches that fast). But those high notes you're hearing are definitely reachable for soprano singers like Inva! :P Maïwenn the actress only lip synced it!

Some of the stuff he did with Bill Laswell was great, especially the band Deadline with Laswell, Manu Dibango, and Phillip Wilson. Also the Material album Third Power

Fela Kuti and Tony Allen made some of the funkiest music ever.
Tony talks about the time James Brown was in Lagos. Every night after their show James's band would head down to Fela's club. Bootsy Collins would take notes while watching Fela.
Tony claims that James had an impact on Fela but Fela had a bigger impact on James.

I second that emotion...
Bachar was into funk big time. I had the high privilege of laying down a couple of tracks with him at his garage studio in Mammoth. He played his sax extra funky, we had a blast.
Seeing his posts in the first page of this thread made me smile.
Gotta have that funk!

Miles Davis explained the problem is that white musicians tend to lag behind the beat. Case in point: the death of funk by disco. The African music its based on has an inverted rythym, with accents on the 1 and 3 beats, instead of 2 and 4. Also, like Miles Davis' music, Afrobeat was modal - there are no chord progressions or changes, ever. Sometimes the saxophones sound completely out of tune, but the timing and articulation is unbelievably precise. A different concept of music in many ways.

Fela Kuti was a Nigerian revolutionary. From wikipedia:
In 1977, Fela and the Afrika '70 released the album Zombie, a scathing attack on Nigerian soldiers using the zombie metaphor to describe the methods of the Nigerian military. The album was a smash hit and infuriated the government, setting off a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic, during which one thousand soldiers attacked the commune. Fela was severely beaten, and his elderly mother (whose house was located opposite the commune) was thrown from a window, causing fatal injuries. The Kalakuta Republic was burned, and Fela's studio, instruments, and master tapes were destroyed. Fela claimed that he would have been killed had it not been for the intervention of a commanding officer as he was being beaten. Fela's response to the attack was to deliver his mother's coffin to the Dodan Barracks in Lagos, General Olusegun Obasanjo's residence, and to write two songs, "Coffin for Head of State" and "Unknown Soldier", referencing the official inquiry that claimed the commune had been destroyed by an unknown soldier.

This fits much better in the Regrets Thread, or maybe in the JB Thread?
The JB Appreciation thread needs a bump.
I only met JB once when camping in the "Badies"? out past Bishop, I was with a crew that was moving from the east coast. We were camped away from some festive folks, our crew of 5, glorified geek lab techs. new hire executives for a big Pharma company who were going to fire a bunch of cool people; major azzholz. I was getting covered/paid to drive and guy-friday the whole trip.
As the moon rose someone was screeching a horn from somewhere in the rocks and lights and partying noises had my fool "supporters" annoyed enough to want to move or tell the gathering & that mad man to STFU. I wasn't sure what to tell them. The other tucks were parked at least half a mile away across the sagebrush.
I said I would go and ask them to tone it down if it went on. I was told that if I did I should take my kit & find my own way from there. I was owed 3k and 6 months of housing in Marin for the trip.
I knew who it had to be...
I said no, but would he like me to at least get the horn noise to stop?
Anthony,(Toney Baloney) already a prick, was a soon to be nightmare suit wearing overpaid department head,
told me again not get into a party or drink anything & to be back in an hour.
I hit the desert heading straight for the pile where I could see the silhouette.
A stupid No0b move, Catclaw, and Cactus brush and prolly scorpions & rattlers but as I arrived at the rocks, bleeding, it was John B.
In the way he had of being great and reserved at the same time, he asked what I was & what I was on If I needed help or what the I thought I was doing striding across the desert at night?
I explained that I'd heard the party, he said what party? I told him that I was rope gun & slave for the east coast invaders, a rock pulling fool & I knew who he was. we hung for a bit reminiscing ogling the moon, We knew some mutual characters, had a few things in common in a marginal way, it made my year. To have sat laughing, hearing a few short riffs, sharing just soaking in his regular my un-imaginable dream.
He explained where they were parked (Bachar rocks?) at the picnic table, where we could meet in daylight and walked away into the moonlight shaking his head.
I never would have been able to make the move I was trying to make if on my 10th day in the promised land having had the truck impounded, I joined the royalty of climbers while I was slaving for weekend top roper Gumbies from the Gunks.
A major regret that . . .
